Portugal Press Kit Press XXI Triennale International Exhibition Milan 2016 02 Apr — 12 Sep Release Press Milan 2016 Portugal XXI Triennale International Exhibition Press Kit/ Objects after objects Objects After Objects, the Portuguese Delegation at the 21st Triennial of Milan The Year of Portuguese Architecture and Design The Triennale di Milano is an event that kicks off a great year for Portuguese architecture and design. The project Objects After Objects proposes a reflection on contemporary project-related practice, its teaching, production, its creative, economic and political dimension, starting in April and running through September. The press conference, promoted by the Ministry of Culture, takes place March 23rd, at around 3PM, at Ajuda National Palace, in Lisbon. The same year the work of Álvaro Siza is being celebrated at the Biennale di Venezia di Architettura, in Italy; where the Portuguese Pritzker Prize winner is being honored in an exhibition at MAXXI, in Rome; with the ongoing exhibit entitled Les Universalistes. Architecture Portugaise 1965 -2015 at Cité de l’Architecture, in Paris; and whose return home, to close out the year, is marked by the Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa (Lisbon Architecture Triennial), a large set of events begins with the Portuguese Representation at the Triennial of Milan. With an area of 225 m2, Portugal’s Pavilion is located at the iconic Leonardo da Vinci National Science and Technology Museum. The Portuguese presence, featuring emerging architecture and design practices, stands out as the only one involving a higher-education design school, while being present with an exterior self-constructed ephemeral architecture, and presenting a disseminated programming, with simultaneous events at various venues in Milan and Portugal. A title is like a portico, mediating our entry into a given space, either physical or conceptual, a possible summary of a problem brought forth to be analysed. What are we faced with, when we look at the title of the 21st Milan International Triennial: 21st Century. Design After Design? The idea will be to think through the design, in the second decade of a new century, while highlighting changes that are internal and external to the critical practice of design that reconfigure the subject itself. The Portuguese programming at the 21st Milan International Triennial emanates from this critical framework and summarizes a curatorial program around the title Objects After Objects. Through this program, the idea is to raise a broad problematization on the practice of the contemporary project, its radicalization, its teaching, production, its creative, economic and political dimension. It is hoped that Objects After Objects will lead us to Subjects After Subjects: to the historical subject (current history project practice), to the present subject (which Milan 2016 Portugal firstly identifies with curators, their proposals, choices, narratives) and to the future subject, the one that could fill the shoes of the former while prolonging the sense of responsibility of the forthcoming achievement. Objects After Objects, commissioned by José Bártolo, under the curatorship of Roberto Cremascoli and Maria Milano, is promoted by the Government of Portugal, via the Ministry of Culture, and organized by ESAD College of Art and Design and ESAD IDEA Research in Design and Art. XXI Triennale International Exhibition The Portuguese programming will be presented at Leonardo da Vinci National Science and Technology Museum, from April 2nd to September 12th, 2016. OBJECTS AFTER OBJECTS — EXHIBITION MODULES The Object Reinvented A reflection regarding the object, its use and reuse and its reinterpretation of the relation between body and space, with its starting point in three workshops, led by architects Paolo Deganello and João Mendes Ribeiro and by designer Fernando Brízio. The resulting production gives rise to a set of unique objects, by students of ESAD – College of Art and Design, as part of the Master’s Degree Study Program in Interior Design. GUESTS AND PARTICIPANTS PAOLO DEGANELLO, JOÃO MENDES RIBEIRO, FERNANDO BRÍZIO, VÂNIA ROVISCO, ESAD STUDENTS — UNDER THE CURATORSHIP OF MARIA MILANO Extemporary Capsule A microarchitecture initiative under a system of self-construction, while serving to support the Portuguese delegation’s exhibit at the Milan Triennial. At its origin is the idea of a project that gradually takes shape through the act of doing. Some thirty students from ESAD and from the Politecnico di Milano are taking part. The workshop bringing the projects to life is part of a follow-up of continuous educational practice included in the Master’s Degree Study Program in Interior Design, as coordinated by Maria Milano. PARTICIPANTS ESAD STUDENTS + POLITECNICO DI MILANO STUDENTS — UNDER THE CURATORSHIP OF PAOLO MESTRINER AND JOÃO CRUZ New Practices in Architecture Emerging examples of Portuguese architecture, corresponding to project practices committed to the real world and operating within a context of social and performance- related intervention. A reflection on the professional role of the architect; regarding architecture as a tool for tackling social problems linked to contemporary project- related culture; and on willingness and openness required for rethinking his role and potential. Objects are an indispensable part of the domestic landscape: books, items for daily use, art collections, chairs, tables, carpets, armchairs and sofas are quiet presences which, while meeting residential requirements, serve as mediators in the relationship between man and the surrounding space. In this regard, everyone’s home is filled with such presences. The 13 interviews conducted at the homes or day-to-day places of major figures of Portuguese architecture all seek to look at their way of inhabiting, by contributing toward an in-depth understanding of our way of being in the world.
