To provide more subsistence fishing opportunity on fish bound for the Tanana River, subsistence fishermen may use selective gear (live-release (manned) fish wheels and dip nets) to target other salmon and non-salmon fish species. All fall chum salmon caught using the selective gear must be released alive immediately and bypass any livebox on a fish wheel. Dip net mesh size is restricted to 4.5-inch or smaller, with a frame 5 feet or smaller between the two farthest points. Fish wheels are encouraged to be “fish-friendly” to include basket sides and bottoms made of a soft material like seine web; and a padded chute to return fall chum salmon to the water immediately. Subsistence Management Actions Subdistricts 6-A, 6-B and Old Minto Area (from the mouth of the Tanana River upstream to the Wood River, including Manley, Minto, and Nenana), Kantishna River, and Subdistrict 5-A (Tanana): Subsistence salmon fishing is closed until further notice. Fishermen may use 4 inch or less gillnet gear to target non-salmon species. Effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday, August 29, subsistence fishermen may also use live-release (manned) fish wheels and dip nets to target other salmon and non-salmon fish species. A fall chum salmon caught in selective gear must be released alive immediately and bypass any livebox on a fish wheel. In the Tanana River up to the Wood River (Kantishna River and Subdistricts 6-A and 6-B) a subsistence permit is required for salmon fishing. Permits are available online at www.adfg.alaska.gov/store/. A reminder that Subdistrict 5-A is along the south bank only and begins at a point opposite the westernmost edge of Illinois Creek upstream along the south bank of the river to the easternmost edge of the Tanana River mouth and includes the following islands: Second, Corbusier, Sixmile, Deet’laa’, Swanson, Blind, Basco, Sword, Leonard, Still, Tanana, and Mission.
