UNIVERSITY SERVICE ADVISING EXPERIENCE James Madison University Freshman Advisor (2004-present) • Advise approximately 60-75 incoming freshman students per academic year. • Responsibilities include attending two 8 hour advising workshops as well as several shorter workshops during the semester designed to make advisors aware of issues facing freshman (e.g., alcohol awareness, learning disabilities), meeting with each freshman for approximately 4 hours during their JMU orientation to discuss the General Education program, degrees offered, the major of their choice, discuss transfer credits/post-secondary enrollment/AP/IB scores, and to physically helping them register for classes in both the fall and spring. • Regularly meet with students who are struggling mid-semester and to provide assistance with any academic difficulties they encounter during their freshman year. • Must be familiar with a variety of majors/minors at the University to properly advise students throughout their freshman year. James Madison University School of Communication Studies Advisor (2002-present) • Advise approximately 40 students per academic year. • Responsibilities include assisting students in picking a Communication Studies concentration, discussing options for minors, helping those who chose a cognate instead of a minor organize and approve their courses, map out their courses for the remainder of their time at JMU, and help individuals fill out their graduation application, reviewing resumes, writing recommendation letters, and providing career counseling to assist students in mapping out their future career options.
