ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN NARRATIVE The architecture of the Resort at Cayo Largo is deeply rooted in the modernist heritage of Latin America and the indigenous architecture of Puerto Rico’s history. Drawing inspiration from the designs of architects such as Félix Candela of Mexico, Oscar Niemeyer and Lina Bo Bardi of Brazil, and contemporary Puerto Rican architects such as John Hix of Vieques, the resort engages guests in a dialogue between contrasting visual concepts of mass and void, weight and weightlessness, light and shadow, and texture and smoothness. Simultaneously, the architecture reflects Marmol Radziner’s design philosophy that emphasizes the connection between a building’s interior spaces and the natural beauty of the site. Each building on the site is unique in its form and visual expression. The buoyant sculptural form of the Arrivals building contrasts with the understated guest villas nearby. The angled gable roofs of the Market Square recall the simple wood and metal houses of old Puerto Rico. Long walls of glass extend the interior spaces outward into the lush gardens and outdoor terraces throughout the resort and frame views of the ocean in the distance. Locally-sourced materials, including tropical hardwoods, textured concrete, natural stone, plaster, and terracotta brick, create a distinct tropical modern vernacular. RON RADZINER, FAIA MARMOL RADZINER Ron Radziner, FAIA, is the design partner of the design-build practice Marmol Radziner. The Los Angeles and San Francisco based firm is known for it’s work in architecture, construction, landscape, interior, and furniture design, as well as the restoration of historic modern buildings by lengendary architects, such as Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler and Cliff May. Architectural projects Range from residences for clients such as Tom Ford, Steven Meisel, and Tina Turk, to boutiques for James Pearce, Maxfield, Oliver Peoples, and Stuart Weitzman. Ron Leads the design of every project to translate each client’s personal definition of luxury into unique architectural solution that forges strong connections between interior and exterior spaces. Current projects include the Century Plaza Hotel: a 64-story luxury residential high-rise in dowtown Los Angeles: and numerous luxury single-family and multi-family residences in California, New York and Hawaii. Ron received a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado and a Bachelor of Science from Califronia Polythenic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. The brother-sister team were a part of the four-founding partners at Commune, where they received the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Award for their body of work completed from 2004 to 2015. Studio Shamshiri brings Pamela and Ramin’s respective backgrounds in production, art direction, and set design to residential, commercial and hospitality projects both domestic and international. The studio’s portfolio includes restoration work for homes designed by iconic architects such as A. Quincy Jones, Stanford White, Nigel Coates, Rudolph Schindler, Myron Hunt, Buff & Hensman and Andrew Geller, as well as ground-up projects with notable contemporaries including Marmol Radziner and Johnston Marklee. The Los Angeles based studio is located in the Thomson Building, a 1920’s Hollywood landmark, that was acquired and restored by the Shamshiri team in 2017.
