TUESDAY 12 SEPTEMBER Today is free of commitments at the School of Divinity, to allow you to attend welcome events for the wider university: 12.00-16.30 (2 slots; 12-2pm & 2.30pm – 4.30pm): Academic Fair at 50 George Square & Lower David Hume Tower 13.00-13.45: Welcome Event for Postgraduate Research (PGR) students in McEwan Hall, Bristo Square (followed by a Student Services Fair until 15:00) 15.00-15.45: Welcome Event for Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students in McEwan Hall, Bristo Square (followed by a Student Services Fair until 17:30) 17.00-20.00: Networking & Social Evening for PG students in Playfair Library, Old College. This is a good day for international students to make contact with the International Office (33 Buccleuch Place, 0131-650-4296) if you have not already done so. The International Office can help you to negotiate all the difficulties you may meet in your first couple of months in the UK – bank accounts, police registration and so on. Dance to a live ceilidh band! There will be snacks and beverages including sodas, juices. Please bring your own beer or wine, and any other food you wish to share. THURSDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 10.00 Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room ‘The British postgraduate system’: for international students 10.45 Rainy Hall Coffee and doughnuts for the Graduate School community 11.15 Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room Postgraduate Committee Elections for Subject Area Reps, and Masters and PhD Reps). Come along and cast your vote! 11.30 Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room Informal Q&A session with PG students. Find out everything you want to know about being a postgrad or living in Edinburgh. This is a good chance to ask about issues like time management, research trips, and relationships with supervisors. Questions about life outside New College are also welcome, e.g. flat-renting, shopping, health, etc. We will do our best to answer them! 12.30 Picnic lunch Meet in New College Quad for a picnic in Princes Street Gardens. Bring a packed lunch or pick up a sandwich from somewhere like Boots, Marks & Spencer or Costa. If the weather is poor the lunch will be in the Rainy Hall. 14.00 Elizabeth Templeton Lecture Room Opening of Year Lecture by Dr Steven Sutcliffe. Afterwards, tea/coffee will be served in the Rainy Hall. FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 11.00 Martin Hall A communion service to start the academic year. All welcome. Followed by lunch in Rainy Hall (you can come to this without attending the service). SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 10.30-16.30 Martin Hall A day conference on ‘Women and the World Church’, organised by the Centre for the Study of World Christianity and the Church of Scotland. Guest lecture by Prof. Kwok Pui-Lan of Harvard. If you would like to come, you need to register in advance by emailing Jean Reynolds at [email protected]. .
