Leaders of Oklahoma must exhibit and embrace the qualities of good leadership: that of listening, learning, adapting, adjusting and maintaining momentum. 1 I remain deeply honored to have been selected to be part of Leadership Oklahoma’s “Best Class Ever”, Class XXIV. However, I am truly humbled to have been allowed to serve in an array of recent years’ LOK Executive Committee roles and now LOK Chair for 2019 – 2020. Leadership Oklahoma’s fiscal year of 2019 – 2020 will be an exciting one! LOK will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Youth Leadership Oklahoma. LOK’s very recent 30th anniversary instilled an array of strategic decisions and actions upon our leadership, Dr. Marion Paden, our staff of Allyson Carson, Tina Biard, and Elizabeth Logan, and our board. In 2019 – 2020, the collective of the three groups, will re-examine those strategic visions and ensure we accountably take steps to continue the longevity of our organization. Born a sixth generation rural Oklahoman, but presently residing in urban Oklahoma, my Scott Stidham Chair personal, philanthropic and professional paths have exposed me to leaders from all of Oklahoma’s locales and walks-of-life. However, no organization has exposed me to a more influential network of distinguished leaders than what LOK possesses. Regardless of our class number, our geographic locale, or our profession, my hope is that our entire network of leaders, even inactive ‘LOK’ers’, will consider attending one of our many member events or assisting with any of LOK’s many committee needs. As a member-led organization, LOK will only be as dynamic as our membership’s interest and involvement. LOK’s ability to maintain a balanced member involvement, rural and urban, public and private sector, ensures our organization will maintain a strong cross section of leaders. “To whom much is given, much is expected” is a scripture and mindset which has permeated generations of my family. Each of us possesses our own inspirational centers of influence. Marion and I hope you will be willing to join us and re-introduce your leadership and influences into LOK in the coming year. Respectfully, Scott M. Stidham Chair 2019 - 2020 Class XXIV VISION MISSION Oklahoma leaders making Oklahoma the leader. To create, inspire and support a dynamic network of leaders whose increased awareness and commitment to service will energize Oklahomans to shape Oklahoma’s future. BELIEFS & VALUES Leadership Oklahoma will hear and answer the call to service. Its members will be passionate about Oklahoma and committed to its future. Members of Leadership Oklahoma will challenge the status quo because they believe that Leadership Oklahoma should play a significant role in helping Oklahoma achieve its ever-growing potential. As a result of their contributions, Leadership Oklahoma will help Oklahoma sustain a strong diversified economy, provide quality career opportunities for its citizens and create an increasingly attractive quality of life. Leadership Oklahoma will foster change through a network of diverse leaders. Leadership Oklahoma will offer an enlightened perspective of the challenges and opportunities facing the state. Through outreach and collaboration, MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR members of Leadership Oklahoma will engage others in support of common goals. Leadership Oklahoma members are expected to be persistent, informed, and involved leaders in the state, embracing a common vision and serving as catalysts to build Oklahoma’s future. 2 A NETWORK OF INFORMED AND CONNECTED LEADERS CAN DRIVE POSITIVE CHANGE: Since its inception, Leadership Oklahoma has provided intentional educational and inspirational experiences for 1,629 of the state’s premier adult leaders and nearly 1,000 high school students through its core class programs. Each participant is carefully recruited, selected, educated and connected to help make a positive impact and shape the future of the state. Additional programs, services and activities are provided throughout the year for high school students and adults to deepen their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing Oklahoma and encourage their commitment and action. WHO WE ARE: In 1986, a group of Oklahoma leaders began a series of meetings Marion Paden and discussions based on the belief that we all have a stake in developing the prosperity and President & CEO confronting the problems of our state. They shared the conviction that our leadership must understand the complex differences and relationships that drive Oklahoma in order to find effective solutions. From those meetings came Leadership Oklahoma, an organization designed to create a dynamic network of leaders whose increased awareness and commitment to service will energize Oklahomans to shape the state’s future. In 1987, Leadership Oklahoma was incorporated and it is designated a non-profit 501(c)(3) by the Internal Revenue Service. We are funded primarily by membership fees, adult program tuition and private donations from individuals, corporations and foundations and governed by a volunteer board of directors that represent all regions of the state. WHAT WE DO: LOK ADULT PROGRAM: Each year, Leadership Oklahoma brings together 50 of the state’s most outstanding leaders for an issues-oriented, class program. Monthly sessions, held in various communities, are designed to address current issues facing the state. Each program session features speakers that are acknowledged leaders in their specific fields, while program participants actively engage in discussion and debate. The process offers an opportunity for inquiry, analysis and development of solutions to the most pressing issues facing our communities and state. In addition, MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO program participants experience the unique culture of each community, weaving for themselves a broad-based and comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing the state with many cultures and geographic diversity. Participants are chosen through a rigorous application process and selected from across the state to represent Oklahoma’s professional, geographical and cultural diversity. The goal is to tap the energies of diverse leaders that represent a microcosm of our state to initiate positive change for the benefit of all Oklahomans. The real payoff is when participants are inspired by what they have learned and find ways to get more involved in improving our state. Based on the interaction and shared experience developed during the class, participants also have respect for the differences among us which must be overcome to achieve success. Leadership Oklahoma maintains its relevancy and impact by offering continuing opportunities for professional development and involvement among its network of 1629 graduates from 181 communities. Throughout each year, programs and activities are presented so that members can increase their awareness of critical issues and to foster the connectedness of the statewide network. YOUTH LOK: Leadership Oklahoma also recognizes the importance of investing in our youth. We know they are our future leaders and we are weary of seeing young talent leave our state. We want to entice our youth to want to stay in, or return to, Oklahoma. With this in mind, in the summer of 2001, Leadership Oklahoma expanded its mission by building a program that would help accomplish this goal. Youth Leadership Oklahoma was established to develop in our young leaders a hope, pride and responsibility for Oklahoma’s future. LEADERSHIP RECOGNITION: Leadership Oklahoma honors the outstanding contributions of Oklahoma corporate and individual leaders at an Excellence in Leadership Awards Dinner and Gala. Presentations are made in the following categories: Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Graduate, Business Leadership and Statewide Community Leadership. In addition, LOK recognizes one of its own members with a Distinguished Leadership Award for Service to LOK. Through our “Helping Oklahoma Contest,” LOK recognizes annually an exceptional Oklahoma volunteer for their service to an Oklahoma non-profit and awards $2,500 to that non-profit. WHY LOK IS IMPORTANT: Leadership Oklahoma is making a difference. It provides hope for the future as we work together to make Oklahoma a better place in which to live and work for all its citizens. Our graduates are actively developing real solutions to make Oklahoma a better state through involvement in state issues and leadership
