Never again, will BACILOS mean exclusively bacteria. Thanks to this musical group, bacilos (Bacillus) is now a synonym of musical excellence, pop/rock music with the flavor of our countries. BACILOS’ music has elements that come all the way from Tierra del Fuego, travel through Brazil, pass by the Caribbean, to finally melt with the influences of North America’s musical waves. Colombian singer/songwriter and guitarist Jorge Villamizar and Puerto Rican percussionist Jose Javier Freire met as college students at the University of Miami and formed a band that played rock and pop music in clubs and bars. A few years later (1995) they met Brazilian bassist André Lopes, also a college student, who performed in a band that played covers, samba, and bossa nova. They asked André to join their group and the three created BACILOS (originally called Bacilos Búlgaros - after a home remedy Jorge’s grandmother used to have in her medicine cabinet). The group immediately developed a tremendous following among the young and hip in South Florida as well as among “the powers that be” in the music industry. Though their original sound could be described as rock/punk with a Latin tinge; through the years, their music became more organic, more in tune with their Latin roots. This would be the sound that would finally take them from playing in clubs and bars to signing a record deal with a major label and touring the world. Though radio airplay was less than optimal, in 2001, BACILOS was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards, Best New Artist and Best Pop Album, Group or Duo, a sign that they were on the right track. A year later BACILOS released their second album, Caraluna and everything came together for the group. Caraluna immediately rocketed to the top of the charts throughout Latin America; achieving the #1 spot in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Chile, Honduras, Ecuador; remaining among the Top 15 Hits on Billboard’s Latin charts.
