It was certainly a game of 2 very different halves, and an unlucky conclusion to a fantastic season. Everyone at Eltham is very proud of this entire squad, and their achievements: Minor Premier by a big margin after 14 competition rounds and Runners up in the Grand Final. All of the players received “runners-up” medallions, and team captain Sean Richards received the Minor Premier Pennant and thanked those present for their support and acknowledged the massive contribution of all the team’s volunteers. Key season highlights of our domestic season have included: Rebels participating in the Dewar Shield in record numbers and thus helping to further lift the standard of the community game across the board. Record numbers of women's teams involved in competition rugby Strong representative success across all our state teams, with particular mention of our Junior Gold Cup teams at U/15s (premiers) and U/17s (runners up) Numerous players from community rugby achieving national selection honours, including three Victorians making Australian Schools, two selected in the Wallaroos that competed in the Women's World Cup and one in the Australian Women's sevens that finished runners up in the IRB world circuit The launch of the NRC ……. the final link in the rep pathway that enables home grown talent to develop their rugby careers without leaving Victoria ·Melbourne Rising's spectacular start to the NRC that currently sees them top of the table! As regards the recent junior and senior finals, on behalf of the VRU Board, I wanted to specifically congratulate the host clubs. Harlequins for hosting Senior Preliminary Finals, Box Hill the Senior Grand Finals and Southern Districts the Junior Grand Finals. All these events were incredibly successful and our host clubs are to be commended for their efforts as first class hosts. Rugby is by no means over. We still have 3 Rising home games and hopefully a final (or two!) to host. Beyond that, the Sevens calendar is growing at a pace. We commenced the inaugural University Sevens last week, to soon be followed by the VRU Club Sevens and a Vic Schools competition commencing next month running for 5 weeks and which looks like including over 20 schools and up to 50 teams. Finally the Melbourne International Sevens will take place in conjunction with the Melbourne Rising's final home game on 18th Oct as Gosch's Paddock, and the finals played on AAMI Park as curtain raisers. Many thanks for all who participated in our great game in 2014….…coaches, players, volunteers, parents, club committees and our traditional rugby supporters. Our game thrives on the spirit of volunteerism. Without such selfless service our game would not exist. The VRU Board thanks you all for your great support of our game and we hope to see you all back next year as well as at all the remaining Rising home games at AAMI Park!
