KAZUBSKI NOTICE TO AUTHORS Acta Protozoologica is intended as a journal serving for the publication of original papers embodying the results of experimental or theoretical research in ail fields of protozoology with the exception of purely clinical reports. The papers must be concise and will not be accepted if they have been previously published elswhere. After acceptance by the Editors papers will be printed in the order as they have been received, in the possibly shortest time. Papers are accepted in English, French, German and Russian. Every paper should begin with the name and postal address of the laboratory, name and the surname of the author, title in the language of the text, and translation of the title into the author's own language. The paper should be accompanied by a sum- mary in the language of the text, not exceeding 100 words, also the translation into the author's own language. The authors speaking English, French, German, or Russian should translate the title and the summary into another one of the 4 lan- guages accepted in the Journal. In the Russian texts also the name and the postal address of the laboratory, legends of tables, plates and text-illustrations must be translated, the translation of the summary may be somewhat more extensive, and the name of the author should be given additionally also in the Latin characters. Manuscript should be a doublespaced typescript (30 lines on one side of a sheet) with a normal margin. No elements of the text should be fully typed in capitals nor in spaced set (only underlining with pencil is admittable). In decimal franctions points (not commas) should be used. The generally accepted abbreviations and symbols are recommended. Nomenclature must agree with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, London 1961. The original and one carbon copy of the whole text material should be supplied. References must be cited in the text indicating only the author and year, thus: "K i n о s i t a 1954 found that, etc." Only all references cited in the text should be listed. The list must be arranged as follows: Ehret C. F. and Powers E. L. 1959: The cell surface of Paramecium. Int Rev. Cytol., 8, 97—133. Gelei J. von 1939: Das àussere Stiitzgertistsystem des Parameciumkorpers. Arch. Protistenk., 92, 245—272. Titles of references are given in their original language (not translated). In papers written in English, French or German, the Cyrillic type of the Russian references is transliterated according to the international system (ISO Recommendation R 9 September 1954),, This regulation is not applied to names if there exists their tradi- tional spelling. Also author may freely choose the transliteration of his own name. In Russian papers, the Russian references are cited in Cyrillic, the others in the Latin characters, but they must be listed all together in the Latin alphabetical order. The following material should be supplied on separate sheets: 1. the running title for the page headlines, 2. tables, 3. legends for text-figures, 4. legends for plates. Line-drawings will be published in the text, photographs and raster-figures on separate plates. No coloured photographs can be published presently. Lettering on photographs and drawings should be marked in pencil. With no regard to the language of the text, only the Latin lettering, arabic numerals or generally accepted symbols are admittable for marking on illustrations. Numbering of text-figures, plates and tables must also be marked in pencil, as well in the legends as in the text. Tables are denoted in English and in French — Table, in German — Tabelle, in Russian — Таблица. In English and French papers text-figures should be deter- mined— Fig., in German — Abb., and in Russian — Рис. Plates are denoted in English and French — Pl., in German — Taf., in Russian — Табл. Galley proofs are sent to the authors. Authors recive 100 reprints without covers. Manuscripts may be submitted to each member of the Editorial Board or direc- tly to the Office: Acta Protozoologica, Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology. Warszawa 22, ul. The cortical organelles and intraclonal dimorphism Studia nad topografią organelli kortykalnych Chilodonella cucullulus (O.F.M.) I. Organelle kortykalne i dymorfizm wewnątrzklonalny The aim of the present series of studies is a tentative description of cortical organelles disposition on the flat ventral surface of Chilodonella cucullulus (O.F.M.) The studies include both the interdivisional period, as well, as the stages of the development of offspring structures in the parental pattern. The present paper contains the result of the first section of studies. The papers which will follow, would deal with the relation of the total number of kineties to the CVPs (contractile vacuole pores) disposition (Kowalska and Kaczanowska 1969 in press) and the geometry with topography of the cortical organelles. We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Z. Raabe for valuable comments and critisism of the manuscript. • Materials and methods Studies were carried out on stocks marked B, C, S and clone Bj of Chilodonella cucullulus (O.F.M.) isolated from mass cultures from the sewage treatment centre at Józefów near Warsaw. Stock were isolated in March 1967. Stock C died out in May of the same year, while stock S died out in April 1968. Stock B underwent conjugation in the fall of 1967 and from one exconjugant from one caryonide clone Bx was isolated. In this clone mass intraclonal conjugation is periodically observed (experimentally tested by S. Radzikowski M. Sc. unpublished). After the mass conjugation of Bx exconjugants were not re-isolated and the conventional mark Bx is applied for each subclone or substocks isolated from the periodically conjugating pool of initial clone Bx. This pool Bx is cultivated till the present time. Protozoans are cultivated in room temperature in Petri dishes in a small amount of tap water to which a drop of fresh baker yeast suspension is added. The protozoans are fed every second day and inoculated every 4—6-th http://rcin.org.pl ACTA PROTOZOOLOGICA VOL. The sporadic infection of cultures with Chilodonella uncinata, or fungi was only removed by means of re-isolation of protozoans. The cultures used in experiments were started from a single ciliate isolated from the stock cultures. The infravital observations were conducted by contrast phase microscopy. Observations were also made of stained ciliates with nigrozin and silvered after Klein and most of them after Chatton-Lwoff in Corliss (1953) modifica- tion. Three series of experiments with protozoans of the same age were con- ducted on stock S and clone Bx in a period when the ciliates were in good physiological condition. Individual samples contained about 10 dividers were isolated during five minutes in stage of advanced cytokinesis. The process of cytokinesis was completed in isolated specimens within 5 to 8 min.
