THE STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI RESEARCH CENTER-KANSAS CITY K0206 Hare and Hare Company Records 1904-1979 220 cubic feet, ca. 450 cubic feet of drawings (1000 rolls), and ca. 100 oversize flat items. Records of Kansas City’s premiere landscape architecture and city planning firm who did designs throughout the Midwest and southwest. Includes drawings, photographs, correspondence and reports, publications and books, and personal papers. HISTORY: The architectural landscape firm, Hare and Hare, was founded by father and son, Sid J. Hare (1860-1938) and S. Herbert Hare (1888-1960). Sid Hare was a surveyor, draftsman, and photographer for the Kansas City engineer's office from 1885-1896. One of his jobs was to assist George Kessler, a landscape architect, who laid the foundation for the city's extensive parks and boulevard system. After serving as superintendent of Forest Hill Cemetery, Hare established his own firm, working independently until his son, Herbert, joined him in 1910. S. Herbert Hare was educated at Harvard and was one of the first six students in the United States to prepare for the relatively new profession of landscape architecture. Herbert joined his father in business, a partnership which would last twenty-eight years. Within the firm, Sid preferred the cemetery and park commissions, and Herbert handled city planning and other projects. By the end of the 1920's, the firm enjoyed a national reputation. Herbert was a consultant to city planning and parks commissions in such cities as Houston and Fort Worth. But in 1930, he was dropped from the City Plan Commission and the Park Board of Kansas City, Missouri, because he would not make political contributions based on a percentage of the fees his office would receive. The firm received no more city appointments during the Pendergast machine years. During the 1930's, however, Herbert Hare was part of a federal commission that wrote guidelines for subdivision zoning regulations that are still in effect. Hare and Hare designed concepts for a wide variety of projects in the Kansas City area and throughout the Midwest. They enjoyed a relationship with the J.C. SHSMO-KC September 17, 2013 REVISED K0206 Hare and Hare Company Records Page 2 Nichols Company and other developers, planning subdivisions and the Country Club Plaza. Other commissions included college and university campuses, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Fort Leonard Wood and other military installations, parks, libraries, cemeteries, schools, and hundreds of private residences. In cooperation with the J.C. Nichols Company and George Kessler (with whom Sid had maintained a professional relationship), they designed the nation's first planned industrial community of Longview, Washington. After Herbert Hare's death in 1960, the business gradually declined. In 1979, Ralph Oschner took over the company, and through innovative marketing practices and hiring decisions, re-established the Hare and Hare reputation. In addition to traditional landscape architecture services, Oschner, Hare and Hare provides professional assistance in rezoning and development cases, working with neighborhood groups, developers, and property owners on civic projects. PROVENANCE: This gift was received from Ralph Oschner as accession 0423kc on June 9, 1987. An additional accession, 0845kc was received on December 29, 1994. Included in them are a large number of folded drawings, notes, photographs, and financial information regarding the job. Often, earlier material was pulled and filed with later working files when the company undertook revisions or new work for an old client. The company began using a job numbering system in 1959 with a two digit year followed by a one-up number for the job (i.e. 59.0001, 59.0002, 59.0003….) To maintain consistency, a similar number for pre-1959 job was created in processing. The year assigned is generally the earliest date but on occasion it was a later date. The job number is the link among the several kinds of documents (drawings, photographs, foldered correspondence and documents, and reports). Some non- integrated files and drawings are in boxes at the end of the series and will at some later date be moved into the appropriate files. The database for drawings identifies the location of the various sized drawings.
