In 1983 it was classified by the UNESCO, along with the Tower of Belém, as a World Heritage Site. Back to Map Pastéis of Belém The world‐famous custard pastries of Belém are typical Portuguese cream pies. The shop that sells them is located in Belém, Lisbon. These pastries are made with a ‘secret recipe’ that has been the same ever. It's just known by the master confectioners who hand‐craft the pastries in the 'secret room'. Back to Map The Tower of Belém is a TheThe TowerTower ofof BelBeléémm fortified tower located in Belém, and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it represents the Portuguese maritime discoveries during the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defence system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. Back to Map Monument to the Discoveries The Monument to the Discoveries is a monument that celebrates the Portuguese who took part in the Age of Discoveries in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was commissioned by Salazar and disassembled in 1958. The one that is now on the right side of the Tagus River is a replica and was opened in 1960.
