Hardware and Software Requirements The following sections provide information about Avid System Utility, random access memory (RAM) requirements, required libraries, and Avid processor boards. Macintosh Operating System Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0 requires one of the following Macintosh¨ operating systems: ¥ Version 7.6.1 or 8.0 for the Power Macintosh¨ 9600 with a 300-MHz, 233-MHz, or 200-MHz processor ¥ Version 7.6.1 or 8.0 for the Power Macintosh 9500 with a 233-MHz, 200-MHz, 150-MHz, or 132-MHz processor c Other versions have not been tested and might cause problems. See ÒVerifying the Macintosh Operating System VersionÓ on page 17. Ethernet Network If you have MediaShare F/C, the Avid systems in your environment need to be connected to a Class C Ethernet network. You can use either a 10 megabits per second (Mb/s) or a 100 Mb/s network. If you use the AvidNetª Transfer Tool, your system also needs to be connected to an Ethernet network. New Features Part 0130-01308-01 Rev. A Release 7.0 Release Notes 7 See the Avid Composer Products Site Preparation Guide, the Avid MediaShare F/C Setup and UserÕs Guide, and the AvidNet Peer-to-Peer Setup and UserÕs Guide for more information about connecting to a net- work. Avid System Test Avid System Test provides a proÞle of the Avid system conÞguration. The utility displays information about the operating system, mounted volumes, system extensions, control panels, and peripheral boards. For information on using Avid System Test, see the Avid System Test Setup and UserÕs Guide. You can see a visual representation of drive space in the Hardware Tool. Use Avid System Test to view all other system information. Built-in Random Access Memory (RAM) Built-in memory refers to the physical memory installed in your Macintosh. Memory requirements vary, depending on what applica- tions you are running. Table 1 shows the minimum RAM requirements for Release 7.0. You must have a total of 160.5 megabytes (MB) of RAM if you operate with all the listed applications. Avid recommends, how- ever, that you install 192 MB. You can launch Media Composer or Film Composer with less than 80 MB of RAM, but system performance may be compromised. The minimum required RAM for optimal operation is 80 MB. b. Your system comes with DAE installed. You need 20 MB of mem- ory to accommodate DAE when you launch Media Composer or Film Composer. If you do not plan to use AudioSuite Plug-Ins, you can disable DAE and use its memory allotment for another application. See ÒDigidesign AudioSuite Plug-InsÓ in the Avid Media Composer and Film Composer WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for more information about DAE. New memory kits are available from Avid for updating your existing RAM conÞgurations. See your Avid sales representative for details. Hardware and Software Requirements Part 0130-01308-01 Rev. A Release 7.0 Release Notes 9 Changing the Memory Allocated to the Application When you install Media Composer or Film Composer Release 7.0, the default memory settings for the application are 46,000 KB (46 MB) for ÒMinimumÓ and 80,000 KB (80 MB) for ÒPreferred.Ó You might need to increase the Preferred size if you are working on large projects with Media Composer or Film Composer. If you increase the amount of memory allocated to the application, make sure to leave enough memory to run the Macintosh operating system and other applications, such as EDL Manager, AvidNet, and online help. The operating systemÕs need for memory is dynamic; therefore, the operating system might require more memory when running certain processes. To change the amount of memory allocated to the application: 1. Click the application icon to highlight it. 2. Choose Get Info from the File menu. The Media Composer Info or Film Composer Info window appears. Part 0130-01308-01 Rev. A Hardware and Software Requirements 10 Release 7.0 Release Notes Minimum size Preferred size 3.
