Elements of the 28th have partici- pated in all major world conflicts - from the Revolutionary War to Operations Iraqi and Enduring Free- dom, to a myriad of contingency operations around the world. During World War I, General of the Armies John J. Pershing nicknamed the 28th the “Iron Division” and during World War II German sol- diers nicknamed the 28th the “Bloody Bucket” because of the ferocity of the Division’s attacks during Normandy and France. In addition to its missions abroad, the 28th has responded to many civil emer- gencies, natural disasters, and domestic operations at the call of the governor – ranging from the Johns- town Floods, Hurricane Katrina, presidential inauguration, G-20 summit, to winter storms. Today, the 28th is one of the most deployed National Guard Divisions in the United States Army. Divi- sion Soldiers have served and continue to serve in Iraq, Afghanistan, Europe, the Sinai, Kosovo and Bos- nia. The Division currently maintains more than 80 armories across the commonwealth. The author- ized strength of the 28th Infantry Division is 15,000 Soldiers - with nearly 13,000 located in Pennsylvania and roughly 2,000 located in units in Virginia, Ohio and New Jersey. The primary elements of today’s 28th "Keystone" Division are the: - 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team - 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team - 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team - 28th Combat Aviation Brigade 4 The 213th Regional Support Group (RSG) Reorganized in 1975, has a lineage that traces back to the “Lehigh Fencibles,” organized in August of 1849 in the city of Allentown, Pennsylvania. The unit was then reorganized less than a year later as the “Allen Rifles,” who later quickly responded to President Lincoln’s call for troops to defend the National Capital in Washington, D.C., at the outbreak of the Civil War. The Allen Rifles and three other Pennsylvania regiments were the first to arrive and established defense in and around the Capital building itself. As a result of their early arrival, the unit has been given the traditional designation of first defenders. Elements of the 213th have participated in eight major conflicts: the Civil War, War with Spain, World Wars I & II, Korea, Kosovo, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to its missions abroad, the 213th has responded to many civil emergencies, natural disasters, and domestic operations at the call of the governor – ranging from most recently Hurricane Katrina, the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, the G-20 Summit, and to a number of winter storms. The primary elements of today’s 213th Regional Support Group are the: - 103rd Engineer Battalion - 154th Quartermaster Battalion - 728th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion - 213th Personnel Company -
