Universal Decimal Classification and Colon Classification: Their Mutual Impact

Universal Decimal Classification and Colon Classification: Their Mutual Impact

Annals of Library and Information Studies Vol. 62, December 2015, pp. 226-230 Universal Decimal Classification and Colon Classification: Their mutual impact Amitabha Chatterjee Retired Professor & Head, Department of Library & Information Science, Jadavpur University, Kolkata 700032, Email: [email protected] Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), being a predecessor of Colon Classification (CC), had impacts on CC in various ways – directly as well as indirectly. But surprisingly CC too made an impact on UDC in various ways during its revision process. The paper discusses how these two classification schemes have influenced each other in different spheres. Keywords: Universal Decimal Classification; Colon Classification; Faceted Classification; Generalia Class; Indicator digit; Notation; Common isolate; Phase relation; Agglomerate Introduction Ranganathan, however, made continuous efforts over Ranganathan traced the development of several decades to remove rigidities of different kinds bibliographic classification schemes in three that the scheme was suffering from and finally it major periods, viz., Pre-Facet Period (1876-1896), became a freely faceted classification scheme. UDC did Classification (UDC) as the pioneering scheme of this start with a monolithic structure, but it also had a triple venture1. Thus it is evident that the concept of large number of common auxiliary tables and the faceted classification began with UDC. It was liberty to combine numbers from different developed initially by Henry la Fontaine and Paul schedules/tables. Thus the idea of facets, though of an Otlet and later by Donker Duyvis by grafting some elementary kind, was embedded in UDC. This indicates that Ranganathan had Indicator digit become aware of the benefits of faceted or polylithic The symbol colon (:) was first used by UDC as an structure of a universal classification scheme and indicator digit for representing both facet relation and adopted such a structure in the very first edition of phase relation. It may be Principle of Increasing Concreteness in science mentioned that while in London, Ranganathan had subjects and the Principle of Increasing Artificiality in made a study of the existing classification schemes, humanities and social science subjects. Mcllwaine International Medium Edition, English Text (1985) has corroborated this view when he said. “it was the [UDC(M)] one of the much criticized distance use of colon in the UDC that suggested the use of the between Literature and Language classes was same symbol to Ranganathan” 4. removed by placing Language along with Literature. This collocation of Literature and Language reflects Notation the collocation of the two basic subjects as found in Notation is possibly the most important aspect of CC. Possibly the decision of UDC to bring Literature any library classification scheme as without notation a and Language at one place in UDC(M) has been scheme cannot fulfil the purposes of classification. inspired by the collocation of these basic subjects in DDC used Indo-Arabic numerals and decimal device CC. for division and sub-division. UDC also took up the same notational system, but used a large number of Generalia class indicator digits, which gave it a bit of versatility. But Generalia class had originally been created in DDC still it was not possible to have more than ten to accommodate all such documents which could not divisions in an array. The limitations noticed in the be placed in any specific main class or basic subject. notational systems of DDC and UDC prompted Both UDC and CC made provision for Generalia Ranganathan to find a notational system free of such class. But nature of the class differs in the two rigidities to be used in his classification system (i.e. schemes. While Generalities (i.e. Generalia) class of CC). Consequently, he opted for mixed notation with UDC, like DDC, includes Generalia approach a longer base and also tried to find devices for materials, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc., extending the length of an array. His efforts resulted and even some basic subjects like Librarianship, in enunciation of empty digit device, emptying Journalism, etc., the Generalia class of CC covers digit device and empty-emptying digit device. Generalia relating to place and person (e.g. z44 Interestingly, in 1948, FID adopted Octave Device Indology, zG Gandhiana, etc.) as also Generalia (predecessor to sector device and empty digit device) approach materials. In UDC it was not possible to for use in UDC, as suggested by Ranganathan himself properly classify documents on Generalia relating to in Brussels International Congress of Libraries and place and person earlier.
