There was no confirmed claim of responsibility for Sunday’s failed assault, but an FBI official told US media that one of the attackers had been previously investigated as an alleged would-be jihadist militant.
ABC News, citing an FBI official, said yesterday that agents had raided an apartment in Phoenix, Arizona thought to belong to Elton Simpson, allegedly one of the slain gunmen. Court documents seen by AFP show Simpson was sentenced to three years probation in 2011 for lying to federal agents investigating him on suspicion of planning to travel to Somalia to fight with jihadists. The second shooter was identified as Nadir Soofi, a roommate of Simpson, according to two sources close to the investigation. ABC News said offi- cials believed Simpson sent out tweets ahead of the attack, with the last one using the hashtag #texasattack.
The White House said President Barack Obama had been briefed on the investigation, which Texas police said was ongoing. “There is no form of expression that justifies an act of violence,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. Commentators were quick to draw parallels to a January shooting at the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris that killed 12 people and wounded 11 more. Turaiji said the panel asked the director that all those who have a hand in corruption must be referred to the public prosecution for criminal investigations.
The lawmaker also said that the panel has given the ports authority and the Audit Bureau one month to report back with the measures taken against those responsible for “big thefts” in the authority. “It was proved to the panel that the ports authority was run by a gang who illegally seized state land and funds,” Turaiji said. The names will be seen as a triple homage to her grandfather Prince Charles, great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and William’s late mother Diana, whose death in 1997 prompted a global outpouring of grief. The name Charlotte was one of the favorites for bookmakers and it has historic royal standing. King George III’s wife Queen Charlotte (1761-1818) was an amateur botanist who used her middle name instead of her first name Sophie. George IV also named his only child Charlotte but she died in childbirth at the age of 21 in 1817.
RIYADH: French President Francois Hollande sought to boost ties in the Gulf yesterday as he oversaw the signing of a warplanes deal with Qatar and arrived in Saudi Arabia for a summit. Hollande will be the first Western head of state to attend a Gulf Cooperation Council annual gathering when it meets in Riyadh today. The summit comes at a crucial time for the six-nation GCC, with a Saudi-led coalition bombing rebels in Yemen, concern over the rise of Islamist militants and regional worries over a potential final nuclear deal with Iran.
With Hollande in attendance, the CEO of French aerospace firm Dassault, Eric Trappier, signed the Ä6.3-billion ($7- billion) deal with Qatari defence officials in Doha. Jagged haircuts have become fashionable among all strata of Iran’s youthful population in recent years, but have divided opinion and been deemed by the authorities as western and unIslamic. “Devil worshipping hairstyles are now forbidden,” said Mostafa Govahi, the head of Iran’s Barbers Union, cited by the ISNA news agency. “Any shop that cuts hair in the devil worshipping style will be harshly dealt with and their licence revoked,” he said, noting that if a business cut hair in such a style this will “violate the Islamic system’s regulations”.
