Additions processed by Lori Hines in 2004-2005. Organizational History The Region 1 Office of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was established by the NAACP National Office in 1944. At the time of its founding, the Region 1 Office was referred to as the West Coast Regional Office and included branches in California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington state. By 1947, this Office expanded to include Arizona, Idaho, Utah and the territory of Hawaii, and by 1952 it included the territory of Alaska. Scope and Content of the Collection The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Region 1 photograph collection consists of photographs from records of the NAACP Region 1 Office, and includes material from NAACP branches in the Western United States, the NAACP National Office and other organizations from ca. 1940-1982. Region 1 includes the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Images range from professionally produced photographs and news service photographs to snapshots. Subjects include membership drives, fundraisers, voter registration and other events as well as portraits. Materials such as publicity shots of national figures and events were presumably received from the National Office. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Region 1 photograph collection was received with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Region 1 records (BANC MSS 78/180 c). The current arrangement reflects two periods of collection processing within the library. The first group (items :1-:165) was initially received in 1978. It was roughly arranged by library staff in two groups: subjects and portraits. When additions (items :166 -:302) were transferred from the organizational records in 2002-2003, new material was appended and arranged by library staff with no attempt to renumber or rearrange the items from the first group. Captions were also provided by library staff, and were derived from accompanying manuscripts, information written on backs of images, and the images themselves. In an effort to streamline processing, the physical description only includes "1 photographic print." The first batch is arranged in two groups: subjects (items :1-: 60) and portraits (items :61-:165). BANC PIC 1978.147 3 The additions are arranged in four groups: portraits; branches; programs and projects; and other organizations and miscellany. Portraits (items :166 -:211) Photographs of identified people, arranged alphabetically by last name. The majority of images are formal portraits. Regional or National Office level status is given when known. Branches (items :212 -:245) Images that were pulled from the branch files of the Regional 1Office. These photographs are arranged alphabetically by state, then by city, and include shots of branch programs and events. Programs and projects (items :246 -:282) Images related to programs administered or created by the Region 1or National Office, such as labor, fund raising, voter registration, membership, and education as well as conferences and conventions. Photographs are arranged roughly subject, then by date. Other organizations and miscellany (items :283 -:302) Collected material and unidentified subjects arranged alphabetically (roughly) by organization or last name of individual. Included are photographs from organizations NAACP had an interest in, or from people asking for NAACP's support. A miscellany, at the end of this group, consists of unidentified photographs that may or may not be directly related to the NAACP. Franklin H.
