DELIVERING OUR TRANSPORT FUTURE NOW rail revitalisation gawler line Work will soon begin on the first stage of the Gawler line upgrade – the next step in the $2.6 billion, decade-long investment in public transport. > A concept image of an electric train at an upgraded station This upgrade includes a $293.5 million investment from the Australian Government towards the Gawler line and will help transform Adelaide’s rail network into a sustainable, state-of-the-art transport system providing faster, cleaner and more efficient services for customers. These significant Stage 1 works on the Gawler line will upgrade sections of the track between North Adelaide and Mawson Lakes and will involve: > upgrading the base layer > installing new gauge-convertible concrete sleepers > improving stormwater drainage > refurbishing/replacing rail > connecting the new Dry Creek railcar depot to the Gawler line. This upgrade is the first step towards electrification of the Gawler line, which is expected to be completed in 2013. Further information including timing of works, substitute bus timetables and modifications to the train timetable will be distributed to residents and commuters around one month prior to the start of construction. All project enquiries: 1300 782 454 Visit: www.infrastructure.sa.gov.au Email: [email protected] Construction works Due to the substantial nature of the works, and to ensure the upgrade is undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible, the Gawler line will be closed between Mawson Interchange and Adelaide Railway Station during construction. Works will begin in mid 2010, however the start date, length of time required for construction, and construction methodology is currently being determined in partnership with the construction contractors. The construction methodology will take into account: > machinery and equipment that can be used > rail corridor access arrangements > having a safe work environment next to the main freight and interstate line which needs to remain operational at all times throughout construction > environmental management constraints > traffic and pedestrian access. Substitute bus services Substitute bus services will operate between Mawson Interchange and Adelaide Railway Station during the construction period and will be designed to replace the existing train services as efficiently as possible. Passengers will be required to allow additional time for their journeys during this time. Train services will continue between Gawler Central and Mawson Interchange, connecting with substitute buses, although some changes to the timetable will be required. Further information including timing of works, substitute bus timetables and modifications to the train timetable will be distributed to residents and commuters around one month prior to the start of construction. Bicycle and mobility aid users Wherever possible, accessible substitute bus services will be provided. These services will be unable to accommodate bicycles. Options for cyclists are being considered in partnership with cycling groups. If you have a mobility aid or bicycle access requirement for public transport, please contact the project team on 1300 782 454 with your specific needs. This will help plan the best use of available resources. Dry Creek Railcar Depot Construction of a new depot for Adelaide’s passenger train fleet is well underway. The new depot is located adjacent to the Gawler main line at Dry Creek, immediately to the north of Dry Creek railway station. The new depot will become the major maintenance, cleaning and re-fuelling facility for the train fleet. It has been designed to accommodate the electrification of the network and future electric train services. The depot is being purpose built to provide efficient and improved maintenance and cleaning facilities for the railcar fleet. Situated on a 10-hectare site, the depot includes a maintenance building of 8,000 square metres. In addition, specialised train cleaning areas are being provided, including an automatic train wash. A new building is being built which will allow the consolidation of operations activities.
