July 2017-Special Events 3 Monday 2:00 Historian Jack Lightcap will present a slide show lecture “The Story of the American Declaration of Independence’ in the Event Center. 4 Tuesday Happy Independence Day! 8:00 PBS stations 48 & 54 will show “A Capitol Fourth.” Emmy 'Award-nominated actor and producer John Stamos is set to host the 37th annual edition of PBS’ A Capitol Fourth, broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The all- star musical and fireworks extravaganza will kick off the country’s 241st birthday with performances by: soul men Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi of The Blues Brothers; iconic multi- platinum selling music legends The Beach Boys; legendary Motown stars The Four Tops; and The Voice Season 12 winner Chris Blue; with the National Symphony Orchestra. Gifted actress and singer Sofia Carson will open the show with a special performance of the national anthem. The concert will also feature a tribute to our men and women in uniform by Trace Adkins who will perform his new single “Still a Soldier.” Also participating in the event will be the Choral Arts Society of Washington, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, the U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, Members of the Armed Forces carrying the State and Territorial Flags and the Armed Forces Color Guard provided by the Military District of Washington, D.C. Capping off the show will be a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and A Capitol Fourth tradition. 5 Wednesday 1:00 We will depart for The National Underground Freedom Center. The Museum is featuring a special exhibit MANDELA: THE JOURNEY TO UBUNTU. The cost for the admission is $18/per Person and due to Life Enrichment by Friday, June 30th. 7 Friday 7:00 Mike Pendell will be here to entertain with songs you know by heart in the Event Center. 9 Sunday 3:30 Pianist Bob Pollack will be in the Chapel to entertain with songs you know and love. He shares stories about the composers and singers that made the songs famous. 10 Monday 10:30 Join us for a card making class in the Victoria Courtyard lounge located on the second floor near Apt #230. Kathleen Hargis brings creative cards for us to make personalized greeting cards to send to friends and family. 3:00 The Reds Hall of Fame will be in the Event Center to present another program for us. Today we welcome a Reds Hall of Fame Alumni Player who will share stories of their time playing with the Reds. 5:00 We will depart for dinner this evening at Hofbräuhaus located in Newport Kentucky. Known for their German Cuisine and Bier this restaurant is a casual gathering place and typically has live music each evening. The menu is available for viewing in the Transportation Sign-up Book located in the Victoria Lobby. Please be sure to sign up in the Transportation sign up book if you plan to attend to ensure proper reservations. 11 Tuesday 7:00 A Speaker from the Society for the Preservation of Music Hall will be here to present a slide show lecture as part of the Beyond the Bricks Speaker series. Today’s lecture “Pulling Out All the Stops: Music Halls Mighty Organs.” 12 Wednesday 7:00 Historian Diane Shields will present a slide show lecture on the Battle of Bunker Hill in the Event Center. Diane has a knack for bringing history to life so be sure to check out this educational lecture. 13 Thursday 1:00 The Writing our Memoirs Group will be meeting this afternoon in the Lee Library. All are welcome as the group shares memories from their lives. 14 Friday 2:30 Please help welcome Jim Powers as he presents a slide show lecture on the French Revolution this afternoon in the Event Center. Jim will offer a look at some pictures, words and ideas about this event which many historians view as the watershed defining Modern European History. We will celebrate Bastille Day with some French Wines and Cheeses following the presentation. 18 Tuesday 11:00 Join us today for a picnic to Big Bone Lick State Park located in Union, Kentucky. This park is loaded with history, and still has a herd of North American Bison. Debbie will be grilling up hamburgers, hotdogs and brats as well as baked beans, served with cold drinks and potato salad. We will take some time after we eat to explore the museum at the park and maybe catch a glimpse of the bison herd. Then for a special dessert we will stop for treats at the refurbished General Store in Rabbit Hash. The Rabbit Hash General Store is a major tourist attraction featuring antiques, collectible Bybee pottery, hand-woven towels from Boston Weavers, brooms made at Berea College in Kentucky, hand-made soaps, wooden kitchen utensils, enamelware, and more. 24 Monday 3:00 The Book Discussion Group will meet in the Lee Library to discuss A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline. Christina Baker Kline is the Author of six novels including the #1 New York Times bestseller Orphan Train. The following is a synopsis of A Piece of the World: To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family’s remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more thatn twenty years, she was the host and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth, and became the subject of one of the best- known paintings of the twentieth century, Christina’s World. This title is available at the Shaw Lobby Reception desk in regular and large print. It is also available as an audio book in the form of book on cd. 25 Tuesday 2:30 Join us in the Victoria Courtyard Lounge for Book Talk with Blossom. Blossom is the Manager at the Hyde Park Branch Library. She typically brings three selections and gives us a synopsis of each book for us to read. She will pick up the following books from her talk in May: Now is the Time by Alice Walker, The Throwback Special by Chris Bachelder, Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart. Come see what she has in store for us next. 5:00 We will depart for dinner at Ruth’s Parkside Café. Ruth Cummings was the bookkeeper for the downtown Mullane’s Parkside Cafe before and during David Tape’s tenure as proprietor there. A decades-long resident of Oakley, Ruth had a kind heart, a quick smile, an eclectic collection of bulldog knick knacks, and a sharp eye for numbers. After her death in 2007, she bequeathed Tape the money that would become part of the initial funding for her namesake business—Ruth’s Parkside Cafe, now located in the American Can Building in Northside. Please be sure to sign up in the Transportation sign up book if you plan to attend to ensure proper reservations. 27 Thursday 7:00 Please Welcome Rob and Linda Bartlett as they share their story and pictures of their pilgrimage to Camino De Santiago. The story of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimages dates back to 900 AD. It was one of the three major pilgrimages in the Middle Ages, the others being to Rome and to Jerusalem. Camino de Santiago literally translates as the Walk or the Way of Saint James, as the final destination contain the relics of Saint James the apostle in Santiago de Compestella in northwestern Spain. Their walk started in St. Jean Pied de Port, France, and covered roughly 500 miles in 33 days. .
