Payette National Forest Phase 1 Multiple Seasonal/Temporary Positions Various Series and Grades , Multiple Duty Locations The Payette National Forest offers many Seasonal/Temporary employment opportunities in and around the communities of Weiser, Council, New Meadows, McCall and Yellow Pine. Recreations/Trails Engineering Timber Fire Archaeology Biological Science Technician Range Administrative Support Services Recreation/Trails Position Title: Forestry Aid Recreation/Trails (Recreation Focus) GS-0462-03 This position assists in the operations of the Developed Recreation Program. Assignments include routine maintenance of recreation and administrative facilities (i.e. painting, minor repairs, general upkeep, fence building, cleaning of bathrooms and fire rings). Public contact occurs on a daily basis and the employee will support the campground host program by keeping them informed and supplied. Proper use and care of motorized and non-motorized hand tools is required. Employee may act as a collection officer collecting campground fees and selling Forest maps. Furthermore, it may be necessary to occasionally support other recreation programs, such as trail maintenance. The normal work schedule is Wednesday through Sunday and the employee will return to their duty station each day. One position may be filled. Housing may be available, but is not guaranteed. Trails Position Description: Employees would work as part of a three or four person trail crew clearing downfall and brush from multiple-use trails. Other duties will include bridge construction, installing water diversion and tread stabilization structures, installation of signs and kiosks, and maintenance of tools and trail related equipment (pulaski tool, shovel, mattock, rock bar, chainsaw, motorcycles, etc.). The position requires working and camping in remote areas with a small crew to accomplish trail maintenance and construction tasks. The position requires working in varying weather and terrain. The crew is generally self-supporting, carrying all personal supplies and equipment in loads up to 65 pounds or more, up to 15 miles per day in remote settings. A high level of fitness is required to safely perform trail duties. Travel is sometimes aided by the use of motorcycles or pack stock. Prior motorcycle trail riding experience is preferred. The normal work schedule is four ten hour days, followed by three days off or could be eight days on and six days off depending on location and scope of work to be accomplished. The crew may also be expected to stay out in the field for up to eight days at a time while performing manual labor in remote environments. Up to two positions may be filled. Housing may be available but is not guaranteed. Housing may be available but is not guaranteed. Position Title: Forestry Technician (Wilderness/Trails): GS-0462-04/05 Positions will be out stationed for the duration of the season. Applicants must be physically fit and at least 18 years of age. These positions will generally start in mid-May and last to mid-October (funding and weather dependent). Forest Work Environment: Work is performed in a forest environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, and rocky. Conditions range from very hot and dry to extremely cold and wet. Rain, snow, wind, dust, or smoke may be encountered. Work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles and hardhats. Overnight travel is required for all field crews. Government housing may be available in McCall for Weed Crew Members. Description of Duties: All Branch employees are expected to be field going and work as part of a self- contained backpacking crew. Backpack loads average between 50-65 lbs. and crews are expected to hike 10-15 miles per day. Crew schedules are normally 10 days on in the field, four days off at a duty station. Trail Crew Duties: heavy maintenance and repair of trails, backpack to project locations and camp out in the field during the work week, stationed at a remote station. Conducts inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Insures that archaeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures. Reviews work in progress to see that standards for pre-field research, survey design, site recording, graphics, and final report are being met. Analyzes archaeological data in preparing reports, for situations where precedents are not fully applicable. Makes recommendations to be used in "determinations of effect" and "determinations of eligibility" by the archaeologist. Compiles and reports information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources. Adapts ground search strategies as determined by specific project requirements i.e., terrain, vegetation cover, and time frames. Applies scientific methods to survey parcels of land to determine likely sites of archaeological interest. Prepares Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms. Enters site and inventory information into databases and onto GIS maps.
