The scheme is delivered weekly for a term to the whole class, including the teacher. The programme consists of: An initial planning meeting. 10 weekly 45 minute instrumental lessons (on the same instrument) for the whole class. A review meeting. The CMEH is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver these sessions. The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme (schools can access for more than one class). Schools will need to identify a suitable deliverer for the sessions and also provide their own instruments. The Hub can assist in this as we have a list of teachers/organisations who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of £70 per term. Further information about the programme and how to access the funding can be found on http://cornwallmusiceducationhub.org/first-access/ Music for Youth 2017 Truro Regional Festival Another year of Music For Youth activities starts soon with booking opening in October for the regional festivals. The Truro Regional Festival is on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February 2017, in partnership with the Hub. The first day at Truro Methodist Church will continue the format of the last 7 years, celebrating the diverse wealth of group music making in Cornwall and Devon. Recent participants have included many Primary and Sec- ondary school groups as well as a large number of ensembles, bands, orchestras and other groups, mak- ing up a wonderfully eclectic and inspiring collection of styles and genres. Where else can you hear Wind Bands, singer-songwriters, Taiko Drumming, Gypsy Jazz, classical chamber music and Junk Bands rubbing their musical noses together! The second day at Truro College is devoted to Rock, Pop, Urban and other amplified groups, and in 2016 the show was absolutely electric in atmosphere as well as sound, featuring experimental rock, Heavy Metal, Punk and Christian Pop amongst the many different performances. Truro Regional Festival is a stand-alone event where groups get to showcase their own music making, hear the great music others are performing and receive what is often insightful and encouraging feedback from MFY mentors. Some groups are also invited to take part in the National Festival in Birmingham, which last July included choirs from Helston Community College and St. Mary’s Primary School in Fal- mouth, Cornwall Youth Orchestra and Cornwall County Youth Choir, the Penwith Piano Quartet and oth- ers. And in November, the duo Miss Jones and rock band Black Leaves of Envy will represent Cornwall at the MFY Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall! Whatever style of music you make, Music For Youth wants to hear from you at http://www.mfy.org.uk/ Hubbub 2016! Hubbub 2016 was another great success down at Heartlands! It was spread over 3 days –26th to 28th June — with the Sunday being a family and Community day. Families were invited to take part in the workshops and though the weather was not the best, everyone seemed to have a good time! The Monday and Tuesday were dedicated to schools from across Cornwall. The theme for this year’s festival was Carnival with a taste of music from around the world. We were excited to be able to offer workshops ranging from African Mu- sic and Dance with the Lions of Zululand to Taiko Drumming, Gamelan, steel pans and didgeridoo. We were also very lucky to welcome the BBC Singers on the Tuesday who worked with schools and the Cornwall County Youth Choir. The chil- dren were very enthusiastic and it was a fantastic opportunity for them to experience music and cultures different from their own. This year was a fantastic Hubbub, and we can’t wait for next year! We hope you can join us on 6th and 7th July for Hubbub 2017! On 3rd June, towns across the country took part in BBC’s Music Day to celebrate all things musical, with events in Cornwall rounding off the day’s celebrations In St Austell town centre, there were performances by both adult and youth bands throughout the day which ended with a ‘big Cornish sing’ led by Oll an Gwella. There was also free music workshops. In Truro, the Cornwall Family Orchestra and Chorus performed alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Hall for Cornwall in a concert that was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Next year’s BBC Music Day is on 9th June so we plan to invite more school groups to be part of the day. Hub Sounds 2016 On 20th May, hundreds of young people from across Cornwall had the opportunity to perform to friends and family in the Hub’s annual showcase at the Hall for Cornwall. This year’s programme was probably the most diverse yet with acts ranging from junk bands to orchestras. The Hub will be holding its next showcase at the HFC on 24th April and will soon be inviting schools and youth ensembles to apply to perform. The Hub has a new scheme which recognises schools where singing is already a key part of school life and support those who want to develop their own vo- cal strategy - Cornish Singing Schools. We have developed the scheme in col- laboration with national vocal specialist, Baz Chapman, to provide a support network and framework which schools can utilise to review and develop their vocal activity. We know what great singing looks like in school, and through our Activity Strands and Golden Threads, can help you to ensure your school is singing regularly and singing well. There is no cost for schools to get involved and you will get access to advice, support and opportunities from the Hub plus one year’s free Sing Up membership. In addition a group from your school will be invited to perform at Songfest 2017 where you will be presented with your Cornish Singing Schools cer- tificate.
