JOSEPH'S 3 Mikan ‘Held' to 24 points by St. Joseph’s in De Paul’s last visit to Hall Court G EO R G E MIKAN, the best of De Paul's basketball products and recognized as the court star of all times, has appeared on the Convention Hall boards a number of times as a pro star with the Minneapolis Lakers, but his college career included but one visit to the Hall. Opposing St. Joseph's back in the early part of the 1943-44 campaign, ''Mr. Basketball," racked up 24 points (10 goals, 4 fouls) as De Paul took over the Hawks, 64-56. That game, incidentally, was the Blue Demons' last appear ance on this court. De Paul has, however, played here seven times before, losing but once. St. Joseph's put over a 52-43 triumph in 1942. Incidentally, in that Mikan-led win for De Paul in 1943, Harry Litwack, present Temple coach, was one of the officials. The other was Warren Weiler, who is a spectator tonight. Temple and De Paul are meeting for the first time on the court. Ron Feiereisel, captain of the Windy City aggregation, led the charge for his team in the first tilt with La Salle this winter at Madison Square Garden, the Demons' leader banking 26 points. He was a standout against the Ex plorers in the return match at Chicago—also a victory for De Paul—but Ken Loeffler, La Salle mentor, figured that smallish Jim Lamkin was the fellow who turned the tide in the second game. Ray Meyer, who has been coaching—and very successfully, too—De Paul since the 1942-43 season, is a Notre Dame graduate and was a standout bas- eteer for the Irish in the late 1930's when the late George Keogan tutored Notre Dame. During his more than 10 seasons at the De Paul helm, Meyer has seen his basketeers win at a better than .700 rate. Four times Meyer-coached De Paul quintets have gone to either the NCAA or National Invitational tournaments. St. Joseph's will have to upset La Salle tonight in order to remain in the running for the mythical city championship.
