SLSmyth 1 Cinematic Poster Design Teacher Information Sheet The purpose of this assessment is to: • Expand student understanding of design skills and design practice. • Enable students to demonstrate skills with appropriate media and techniques for design. • Enable students to demonstrate an understanding of methods and ideas from established practice appropriate to design. • Enable students to develop ideas in a related series of drawings appropriate to established design practice. Achievement Standard/s: This assessment serves as a method by which the following achievement standards might be measured. Both of these standards are internally assessed. Achievement Standard Number 2.1 Demonstrate an understanding of methods and ideas Title from established practice appropriate to design. Number of Credits 4 Version 1 Context/Setting: This activity requires students to demonstrate understanding of methods and ideas from established practice appropriate to design and to develop ideas in a related series of drawings appropriate to established design practice. Students are to do this within the context of communicating and developing a visual idea based on vintage and contemporary poster design, current or historical events and established design practice. Context also refers to the varied sites and modes in which these practices occur. In order to demonstrate their understanding, the students will draw on the work of established artists/illustrators and designers in order to put together a cohesive unit of design work that shows process, development and exploration of content and media. It is recommended that you hold mini-critiques/peer based pair and share discussions with the students at the end of each task deadline to ensure appropriate time management on the part of the students. Duration: 10 weeks Total Credits Available: 8 Resource Requirements: • A list of suggested artist models for students to investigate (Resource A). • Images of cult movie posters. • Books, websites, magazines relevant to subject matter and artist models (Resource B). • Access to cameras, computers, appropriate software (photoshop, illustrator, etc) and printers for research and design work. Brief: For years the entertainment industry has commissioned artists/illustrators and designers to generate theatrical/cinematic posters as part of campaigns to promote their shows and films. In this assessment, you are required to produce a promotional poster in the style of vintage or contemporary poster artists, in order to generate public awareness about a a movie that will premiere at a COMEDY FILM FESTIVAL. Your design needs to be based on cinematic style posters (both vintage and contemporary) and should be appropriate for incorporation straight into a major public promotional campaign. Visual Arts Achievement Standards 2.1 & 2.3 ‘Design’ Task Sheet SLSmyth 4 Cinematic Poster Design Student Task Sheet Task 1: Research - Artist Models: (Class time: approximately two weeks, plus homework) a) Identify three theatrical/cinematic poster designers from Resource A who have 2-3 pieces in their portfolio that you like the most. Print or photocopy each of the images you have chosen and reference them appropriately so that you can find them again in future. For each artist consider the following questions and write a paragraph summarising the information you have found: • Which design principles has the designer made use of? How? • How has the designer organised their posters visually? • How has the designer made use of colour? • How could you use any of the ideas that the designer has used? Why? • How has the designer used text & typography in their work? • Does each designer have a ‘signature style’? Explain what they are. (Approximately 1 x A4 page per designer - including images and text and references) b) Using drawings/sketches and notes, present an A3 sized summary of the key features elements processes that your designers have used. You should justify how you might be able to use these elements in your future designs. (1 x A3 page) Task 2: Research – An Event: (Class time: approximately two weeks, plus homework) a) Research a favourite classic or contemporary film and re-invent the idea behind it to make it into a ‘spoof’ for the comedy film festival (EG: If you have picked JAWS, then instead of a man-eating shark, maybe a bloodthirsty goldfish is terrorising a local beach!). Look for imagery and articles about your choice that will be useful for you to refer to later, and make useful notes next to the images you find. You may collect imagery in lots of different ways, including: • Photocopy imagery from books/magazines • Take your own photographs of appropriate things • Watch movies and find useful ‘movie stills’ to use • Collage useful images onto a page (Approximately 3 x A4 pages) b) Summarise your ‘event’ research. What is the most important and valuable information? Write or bullet-point the critical information that you will need to continue with the design process. (Approximately 1/2 of an A4 page) Task 3: Fonts & Tag-lines: (Class time: approximately one week, plus homework) a) Referring to your existing research and other font sources, identify 10 font styles that might be suitable for your designs. Present all 10 font styles on a sheet of A3 paper and be sure to include full alphabets, both caps and low caps, numerals and common punctuation in your presentation. You must also record the name and source of each font so that you can refer to them later. Of your 10 font styles, highlight the three that you think will be the most suitable for your event/ideas. (Approximately 1 x A3 page) b) Develop a possible tag-line for your event. Used to create ‘buzz’, a tag-line is a short phrase angled to capture audience attention. After the logo, tag-lines are possibly the most noticeable element of business identity. Hot wired” - GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS Use your current research to help you come up with ideas. You could also check out existing tag-lines to get some really brilliant and amusing ideas. You must present at least 10 possible tag-lines on a sheet of A4 paper - highlighting your favourite three choices. On a second sheet of A4 paper present your three favourite tag-lines in each of your three favourite font styles. (Approximately 2 x A4 pages) Task 4: Developing Your Ideas: (Class time: approximately three weeks, plus homework) Using your research to date as a guide, design the poster for your event. You will need to do this by following this process: a) Make a series of quick sketches (thumbnails) of your ideas.
