In January, 1853, the General Assembly passed a resolution directing the Secretary of State to make a complete Index of all the printed Schedules, or Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly which were destitute of such Index. This was, accordingly, after great labor, accomplished. Subsequently this work was completed to the end of the year 1850. The earliest printed Schedule in the State Archives dates back to the year 1758. The Index, therefore, extended through ninety-three years, and included four hundred and fifty-four sessions of the General Assembly. During the twelve years, from 1850 to 1862, there have been thirty-six sessions of this body, to each of which there is a separate Index in the Schedules. The labor of looking through so many Indexes was such that the General Assembly, at its August session, 1862, passed a Resolu- tion directing the Secretary of State to continue the large Index referred to down to the present time, in the same manner as that had been made. The result is this work. To render this Index more complete as a work of reference, the Secretary has prefixed to it several tables, in which he has arranged the most important corpo- rations in the State, the office where their business is transacted and company meet- ings held, the date of their charters and of all the amendments made thereto. These tables will be found of great utility, inasmuch, as when the charter of a company is sought, it is of equal importance toknow what amendments have been made to it. The General Index is alphabetically arranged in chronological order. The subject, a prominent actor in every case, is made the leading word, and when two words are equally prominent, the article is repeated under the different heads.
