APPENDIX A Project Files This Appendix explains which files are created for each project type in Visual Studio .NET 2003 and their various descriptions. First, you'll see the project types and the files created by default with those project types. Then, in the second section, you'll see these various file types explained. Project Types and Their Associated Files Table A-1 presents the project types and their associated files. For an explanation of the file types themselves, please refer to the next section. TableA-1. The most important files are code files, Solution File, and the project files generated by the wizards. APPENDIX A PROJECT FILES 495 TableA-2. File Types Serial Number File Type File Extension Description 1 Code File .vb or .cs Whenever a project is created in Visual Studio .NET, a code file is created in which the code is stored. Here are a few examples of what the code file could contain: WmdowsForm Class Module (Not inC#) Component Class User Control Custom Control Code File Inherited Form Web Custom Control Inherited User Control Windows Service COM Class Transactional Component Installer Class Web Form Web Service Web Custom Control 2 DataSet .xsd A file for creating an XML schema with DataSet classes. 3 XMLFile . xml XMLfiles. 4 XMLSchema .xsd Schema for XML documents. 5 HTMLPage .html An HTML page that can include client-side code. Even Frameset can be saved as an HTML file. 6 Text File .txt Similar to creating a text file from Notepad . 7 XSLTFile . xslt A file used to transform XML documents. 8 StyleSheet .css A cascading style sheet used for rich HTML style definitions. 9 Crystal Report .rpt Visual Studio .NET is integrated into Crystal Reports and provides a designer to help in the creation of a Crystal Report file that publishes data to a Windows or Web form. 10 Bitmap File .bmp Similar to creating a Bitmap file from MSPaint. 11 Cursor File .cur Wm32 cursor file. 12 Icon File .ico Wm32 icon file. 13 Assembly .resx These are Resource files that are used in the application. Continued 496 APPENDIX A PROJECT FILES TableA-2. File Types (continued) Serial Number File Type File Extension Description 14 Assembly .vb or .cs This is the other rue that Information File is created with all types of projects under Visual Studio.NET. These files contain attributes that control general information about an assembly. Attributes added by default to the C# or VB Project differ. The important thing to note is that this file can contain the Key File attribute, which is used to add files to the GAC. A few examples or these attributes follow. Though the default Assembly Information files created for VB and C# differ, you always have the option of adding these attributes yourself. Here are few of these attributes to give you an idea of the possibilities: C# [assembly: AssemblyTitle("")] [assembly: AssemblyVersion("l.O. *")] [assembly: AssemblyKeyFile(""~l [assembly: AssemblyKeyName("" ] VB <Assembly: Guid("6CBEBB65-SC1D- 43BS-8A7F-02216B92BCDE")> <Assembly: CLSCompliant(True)> 15 Application .config Prior to configuration, Configuration File we had INI files (or the registry) to change the settings of Applications. .NET now provides a standard way for changing these setting options. The file also contains other options and has standard tags to reduce the number of lines of code and promote ease of maintenance . 16 JScript File . js A script file containing I Script code. 17 VBScript File .vbs A script rue containingVBScript code 18 Windows .wsf A file containing script that Script Host is run as a Windows program. 19 Web Forms .aspx ASPX files are ASP. NET files that are created for web applications. With previous versions, the ASP file extension was . asp. With ASP.NET the code and presentation are separated; the code is stored in the VB or CS file, while the ASPX file contains the presentation, i.e., HTML or server controls.
