Brockenhurst is one of 37 Parish and Town Councils within the area covered by New Forest District Council and is situated wholly within the New Forest National Park. It has a population of around 3,400 including Wootton. Councillors are elected every four years (usually coinciding with District Council elections): ten for the Brockenhurst ward and one to represent Wootton ward. The next election takes place in May 2019. The Council employs a Parish Clerk who is responsible for supporting the Council in carrying out its functions and implementing its decisions. The Council’s accounts are published annually and are subject to scrutiny by an internal and external auditor. The Council works closely with New Forest District Council, Hampshire County Council (particularly the Highways Department) and the New Forest National Park Authority (NFNPA). Brockenhurst Parish Council has responsibility for amenities such as the allotments at Black Knowl, the Playground at the Village Hall, the Cemetery at Church Lane, the bus shelter at Waters Green and the many benches scattered around the Parish. Please contact the Parish Clerk for details of allotment availability, waiting list and charges. The Parish Council meets on the third Tuesday of the month (except August and December) at 7pm in the Village Hall. The meeting is open to the public and a short period is set aside at the beginning of each meeting to enable public presentments to be made. The Annual Parish Meeting is always held on the fourth Tuesday of April. Planning Committee The Parish Council Planning Committee comments on local planning applications and forwards its views to the NFNPA for consideration in its role as the planning authority. The meeting is open to the public and comments and concerns relating to planning applications can be addressed to Councillors. The meeting usually takes place on the fourth Tuesday of the month but this is subject to change so please contact the Parish Clerk to check the date of the meeting and/or when a particular application is being discussed. If you are forwarding written comments to the NFNPA it is helpful to send them to the Parish Council as well, preferably by email. Planning applications are available to view on the NFNPA website (www.newforestnpa.gov.uk) and at Lymington Town Hall during public opening hours. www.brockenhurst.gov.uk Page 3 Amenities & Infrastructure Committee The Amenities & Infrastructure Committee meets three times per year but any items of concern can be reported to the Parish Clerk in the interim. Personnel & Resources Committee The Personnel & Resources Committee which meets at least three times per year and deals with all financial and staffing issues, including setting the precept each year. Events Committee The Events Committee is a joint committee with Brockenhurst Business Association, Friends of Brockenhurst, the Church and volunteers. It organises the annual Pancake Races, the Christmas Fun Evening and other events for national or local commemorations. The schedule of all Parish Council and Committee meetings for the year is publicised in advance on the Parish Council notice board in Brookley Road and on the Council’s website; details are also available from the Parish Clerk. Minutes of Parish Council meetings and other papers are available on our website or from the Parish Clerk. At the time of publication, the Chairmen of each Parish Council Committee were as follows: Amenities & Infrastructure Michael Croker Events Harry Oram Personnel & Resources John Wingham Planning John Korbey The Nalder Trust As a result of a bequest from Miss Nalder almost twenty five years ago, the Nalder Charitable Trust, of which the Parish Council is sole trustee, owns four flats at Homeforde House. These are let to local people over the age of 55 who have a local connection but could not otherwise afford to live in the Parish. They have brought enormous benefit to the tenants during that time and are a great asset to the village. Please contact New Forest Villages Housing Association on 01425 611855 if you would like to be considered for the waiting list. Donations and bequests to the Nalder Trust are always welcome – please contact the Parish Clerk for more information. The Forestry Commission is responsible for the management of the Crown lands, balancing opportunities for wildlife and conservation, timber production and public recreation. Forest Keepers are responsible for the wildlife of the Forest: if a commoning animal (pony, cow, donkey, sheep or pig) is in distress, or to report a sick or injured deer, please contact the local Agister by telephone on 0300 067 4600. To report road traffic accidents involving Forest stock, please phone the Police on 999. The open forest is historically the domain of the New Forest Commoners with ancient ‘Forest Rights’, which are enshrined in Forest Law and are administered and enforced by the Verderers’ Court.
