DuPuis, Jr. Species R SP SU FA WI Wildlife and Environmental Area. The property contains Ducks, Geese & Swans Anatidae 21,875 acres of pine flatwoods, wet prairies, hammocks, Black-Bellied Whistling Duck (W) O O marsh and cypress domes. It was purchased by the South Fulvous Whistling Duck (W) O O Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in 1986 Mottled Duck (P) U U C C through the Save Our Rivers program. Stewardship of the Blue-winged Teal (W) U U property is currently a cooperative effort between the Green-winged Teal (W) U U SFWMD and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Ring-necked Duck (W) U U Commission (FWC). Prior to SFWMD acquisition, the Wood Duck (P) U U U U property was operated as a cattle and sheep ranch by the late John G. DuPuis, Jr., of Miami. Turkeys Phasianidae Wild Turkey (P) C C C C The area is home to numerous species of wildlife, Quail Odontophoride including deer turkey, quail, squirrel, fox, coyote, feral Northern Bobwhite (P) C C C C pig and bobcat. A variety of waterfowl and wading birds Grebes Podicipedidae Species R SP SU FA WI use the property’s abundant wetlands. These species are Pied-billed Grebe (P) U U U U most plentiful when water levels are receding and food Osprey (P) O O O O sources become more concentrated. Bald eagles, owls and Pelicans Pelecanidae Swallow-tailed Kite (S) U U U hawks are frequently sighted throughout the property. American White Pelican (W) U Bald Eagle (P) C C C C Woodpeckers and songbirds are common in upland areas. Brown Pelican (P) U U U U Cormorants Phalacrocoracide Northern Harrier (W) C C DuPuis offers many recreational opportunities for the Double-crested Cormorant (P) U U C C Red-shouldered Hawk (P) C C C C outdoor enthusiast, including more than 35 miles of the Red-tailed Hawk (P) C C C C Darters Anhingidae Florida Trail composed of four loops ranging from 5 Anhinga (P) C C C C Cooper's Hawk (W) O miles to 15.6 miles. The trail includes a connector trail to Sharp-shinned Hawk (W) O the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area. Hiking trails Bitterns, Herons & Egrets Ardeidae American Bittern (W) U cross a variety of terrains from wetlands to hammocks.
