Originals & photocopies. 1821-1996. 1969.6.1 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Arndt Mathis Stickles was born in Patricksburg, Indiana, 4 January 1872, the son of Mathis and Elizabeth (Kiefaber) Stickles. He was educated in the Patricksburg public schools then attended the University of Indiana where he received his A.B. in 1897, his M.A. in 1904, and his Ph D. in 1923. He also received a second master’s degree in 1910 from Harvard University where he held a teaching scholarship from 1909 to 1910. He began his career in education in 1899 as a teacher and principal in the Yorktown, Indiana schools. From 1901 to 1903 he was head of the Department of History and Economics at the high school in Elkhart, Indiana. It was in 1908, while he was head of the Department of History at Evansville Central High School, that he was invited by Dr. Henry Hardin Cherry to become head of the History Department at Western Kentucky State Normal School in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In this position, as one of Western’s first faculty members, Dr. Stickles would become a noted historian, teacher, and author, not retiring until 1954. At that time, his 46 ½ years of service was a national record for a professor at the same accredited institution of higher learning. During his tenure at Western, Dr. Stickles published the following works: Elements of Government: Political Institutions, Local and National, in the United States (1914), The Critical Court Struggle in Kentucky, 1819-1829 (1929), and Simon Bolivar Buckner: Borderland Knight (1940). In 1954 he co-authored the textbook The Story of Kentucky with T. C. Cherry. Other scholarly production included: “Pioneer Kentucky from 1792-1800 as Mirrored in the Kentucky Gazette,” and “The Ruins of a Confederate Fort on the Campus of Western Kentucky State College.” Professionally, Dr. Stickles was a member of the Southern Historical Association, the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, and the Kentucky Education Association. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church, the local Masonic lodge, and a charter member and past president of the Bowling Green Kiwanis Club. In his leisure time he was an avid gardener and fisherman. Arndt Stickles married Henderson, Kentucky native Laura Gorden Chambers 26 July 1911 in Louisville, Kentucky. They had three children: Elizabeth Hume Stickles, Harriet Henry (Stickles) Griffith, and James Channing Stickles. Mrs. Stickles died 4 January 1953. Dr. 2 Stickles died 13 October 1968 and is buried next to his wife in Fairview Cemetery, Bowling Green, Kentucky.
