Several excellent runs of real store cattle consigned by new and regular supporters of the market delivered some astounding price. A 26m Simmental steer, one in an entry of fifteen, from Michael Tooze & family, Broadsands realised the top price on the day of £1360 with similar aged Limousins to £1255, South Devons to £1250 and Angus steers to £1240 etc. Daughter Gemma Tooze sold two 25m South Devon steers at £1250 apiece. Another highlight of the sale was an entry of fifteen smart British Blue steers all in the 21-24m age bracket that sold readily in matching groups to a top of £1250 (x5) also £1240 (x4), £1220 (x3) and £1195 (x3). A further entry of 21 South Devon and Charolais crosses from John Trounce, Truro saw his best 20m Charolais steers rise to £1290 and heifers of the same age to £1070. South Devons off this Cornish farm saw 18m steers to £1125 (x3), 15-17m to £1020 and 18m heifers to £975. J Matthews & Son, Saltash presented twenty-six well bred South Devon cattle with steers at 16-20m selling in matching groups to £1170 (x5), £1125 (x5), £1055 (x4), £1040 (x4) while 18-22m heifers made to £1000 (x4) with younger sorts to £920. 26m Limousins to £1285 for FJC Masters & Son, Warleggan. 20m Blues to £1140 for a bunch of four steers from John Searle & Partners, Crediton who also sold a group of four heifers to £1105. 16m Charolais bullocks to £1040 for Edward & George Pollard, North Bovey. Yearling Limousins from EC Stanbury & Son, Inwardleigh to £1205 and Charolais yearlings to £935 for MH Eggins, Roborough. Well farmed 25m Friesian steers to £990 for J Milton, West Anstey, others 19-20m to £905 (x4) for Tony West, South Zeal. 14m South Devon steers to £990 for John Jordan of Newton Abbot. Best conformation heifers in demand with top of £1105 already mentioned. Other 19m Blues to £1065 (x2) for Clive Timms & Son, Inwardleigh who also sold four Limousins at £1020. Yearling Charolais to £930 for MH Eggins, and Limousins to £860 for EC Stanbury & Son. 50m cull South Devon cow to £1200 for Andrew & Kirsten Musgrave, Williton. 63 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Steers to £765 Heifers to £615 A similar number forward saw a top call of £765 from Steve Francis of South Tawton showing smart Limousin cross steers (9m), with others to £720 and £710. Ron Wonnacott and Sons of Chagford back again attaining £730 for Charolais cross steers, Heather Bond & Daughters of Bovey Tracey hit £725 for Simmental steers, Martin Daw of Ugborough realised £720 for cracking Limousin steers (9m), whilst a consignment from Brian Cornish down from Holcombe Rogus saw the best hit £710 for Blue steers (11m). Heifers topped at £615 for Chris Heath of Sherford, Martin Daw attained £600 for Limousin cross (9m), whilst Angus heifers from the Forward family of Tiverton realised £590 (9m). Keep the cattle coming, more required in this section each and every week 126 CALVES – 10.15AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Another excellent entry of calves saw an overall easier trade than of late although the best calves CALVES - 10.15 am were a strong trade! Top of the day was £422 for a super British Blue bull from Paul Hendy of CALVES Bulls Heifers Kingsbridge who sold another at £350. Heifers topped at £412 & £388 for weaned Limousin heifers from Messrs FR Jersey 14 65 23 Gillard & Partners of Cheriton Bishop who also sold a Hereford at £300. Young calves topped at £292 for a British Blue heifer from Paul Hendy with others to £280 for Len & Jack Bartlett of Honiton & £272 for Mark Davey. Hereford Heifers to £280 for James Baker. Only young and smaller Friesians forward which saw the best to £72 for Messrs GJ & CA Mock of Umberleigh. 230 MONTHLY BREEDING CATTLE – 11AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Mark Bromell 07966 430001 A massive entry of over 200 Pedigree South Devon Cattle part of our monthly Beef Breeding Sale of 230 head saw a packed ringside with buyers from as far as South Wales, Oxford and all over the Westcountry. The sale commenced with a consignment of Native Cows and Calves from Julie Williams of Ilsington which topped at £1550 for a 2011 born South Devon Cow with a March born South Devon Bull calf at foot, other similar outfits sold to £1500 & £1450 whilst Aberdeen Angus heifers with spring born calves sold to £1400 and Shorthorn cross Cows sold to £1250 & £1150. Top of the day was 2600gns for a super six year old South Devon stock bull “Waterlane Gerald” from Simon Knight of Ottery St Mary. The first dispersal sale was the “Kingsmeade” herd of 85 Pedigree South Devons from Andrew & Kirsten Musgrave from Taunton in Somerset who travelled their herd to Exeter and saw a cracking trade topping at 2050gns for “Waddeton Ann 126” a 2010 born cow with her March born steer calf at foot, she sold Messrs Rowe of Helston who purchased some excellent outfits including “Kingsmeade Duchess 1” a 2013 born cow by Edmeston Homer 1 with her March born steer calf at 2020gns and “Hay Lane Alison” and “Broadhembury Trewint Ann 14”, both at 2000gns. Also at 2000gns was 2008 born “Waddeton Hilda 76” by Trewint Magnet Magic which sold with her two month old heifer calf at 2000gns to Chris Page of Oxford. In all 10 outfits sold over £2000 from Kingsmeade. Served Cows from this dispersal sold to 1500gns for “Grove Buttercup 118” whilst maiden heifers reached 1000gns. The second dispersal of the day was from John Trounce of Portloe who again saw a fantastic trade for his “Cruggan” herd of 80 Pedigree South Devons with 10 outfits over £2000 topping at 2100gns for “Cruggan Rachel 2”a 2014 born cow with her heifer calf at foot, she sold to neighbouring farmer Messrs Elliot who also purchased “Cruggan Mary 3” a 2013 born cow with her heifer calf at 2000gns. Next at 2050gns was 2012 born “Cruggan Prudence 2” with her heifer calf purchased my Messrs Edwards of Chard. Four more cows sold at 2000gns including 2012 born “Cruggan Pamela 2” which sold with her March born heifer calf to Messrs T Emery & Son of Abergavenny who purchased 24 quality outifts. In Calf heifers from this herd met strong interest and sold to 1520gns for “Cruggan Portia 4” due in Decmeber, she sold to Messrs Northey of Ivybridge. Bulling heifers also sold to a strong trade with three smart heifers making 950gns each. A super consignment of cows & calves followed this dispersal from David & Jean Walters’ “Broadhembury” herd which sold to a top of 1850gns for 2012 born “Broadhembury Trewint Holly 29” which sold with her outstanding April born steer calf at foot. A consignment of quality yearling heifers from the “Billington” herd of Messrs GK & MA Garrett of Okehampton which sold to 950gns three time for polled heifers by Polkinghorne King George 3. Best to £77 & £74 for BP Potbury of Wellington, £76 for Robert & Edward Mortimer of Kennford, £75 & £73.50 for John Midgley of Bovey Tracey and £75 & £72.50 for Dave Webber of Umberleigh. Others to £73.50 & £70.50 for Alan Cottle of Bratton Fleming, £72.50 & £70.50 for Allison Collings of Diptford, £72.50, £70.50 & £70 for Michael & Janet Folland of Roborough, £72 & £71 for John Wood of Wimborne and a further ten pens sold between £70 & £71.50.
