NJTV Tackles

OCTOBER 2016 NJTV Tackles Poverty, Inequality & Opportunity in America NJTV is joining with its sister stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21 to explore the causes and solutions for poverty across the U.S. in WNET’s multi-platform, multi-station initiative, Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America. NJTV takes a closer look at the issues facing Atlantic City, an iconic seaside resort, home to a legendary boardwalk, and a metropolis hanging precariously in the midst of an economic crisis. Voices from Atlantic City (Wednesday, October 19 at 8pm) tells the stories of the rise and fall of the once-thriving gambling and entertainment mecca through first person accounts of card dealers, cocktail waitresses, construction workers and other who have lost their jobs, or are hanging on to them by a thread, yet still have hope for the troubled city. As America prepares to elect a new president, Dream On (Thursday, October 20 at 8pm) takes an unflinching look at the perilous state of the American Dream after decades of rising income inequality and stagnating economic mobility. Political comedian John Fugelsang hits the road (in a cobalt blue Ford) to retrace the journey of French aristocrat, political scientist and historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who travelled across the United States in 1831. Tocqueville’s nine month journey covered 7,000 miles, and resulted in the publication of Democracy in America, which came to define America as a place where anyone, of any background, could climb the ladder of economic opportunity. WNET and journalist Tavis Smiley will tackle the hot button issue of minimum wage in Getting On (Saturday, October 22 at 7pm), reporting on what this really means for workers trying to make a livable wage and for business owners trying Learn more at pbs.org/wnet/chasing-the-dream Preview videos and more at njtvonline.org ALAN BARKER; TS MEDIA INC./VAN EVERS to make payroll, weaving real-life stories with observations by economic experts. ATLANTIC CITY NIGHTS: KRISTIN CHENOWETH Atlantic City Nights spotlights top performers both past and present in the Jersey Shore’s entertainment capital, Atlantic City. Tony and Emmy Award-winning singer, dancer and actress Kristin Chenoweth talks with host Joyce Kulhawik about her start on the Broadway stage, how she turned her diminutive size (4’11”) and high voice into valuable assets, and describes her first trip to Atlantic City with her adoptive parents, just as she was about to perform in Steel Pier, her Broadway musical debut. Kristin also shares how she landed one of her first major musical roles — auditioning on a whim while accompanying her friend to PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12 AT 8PM a tryout — which changed the trajectory of her career.
