Place the frozen water bottle under your foot and roll it back and forth. This technique allows you to receive both the benefits of icing and massage. Also focus on stretching your Achilles tendon since a tight heel cord is one of the main causes of plantar fasciitis. Always remember to contact a member of the sports medicine team if you have sustained any type of injury. Coach of the Month Stacey Bean has led the SFU Field Hockey team to have an overall season record of 11-2. 1. With a successful season so far, what is the mindset of the team at this point? How do you contribute to that mindset? (what do you remind them of at practice?) The team is confident and focused. They are really working hard every day in training in order to achieve their goals. I am very fortunate to have tremendous leadership on the team, so it really doesn't take many words from me to get the team training the way they need to. It's really a matter of setting them up for success by running them thru drills with speed and tempo. 2. Compared to last year, what are some of the improvements the team has made so far this season? We're a year older and have good balance -- our starting line-up consists of 4 seniors, 3 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 1 freshman. And we have some good solid play coming from the bench on game day and in training to challenge the starters daily. As I said earlier, we have tremendous leadership -- and that always leads to team success. Our schedule this season is better balanced with home/away games...it's pretty much split 50:50. Last year, with us moving to the A10 so late in the summer, we ended up with only 4 home games all season. 3. What are your goals for the remainder of the season? Our goals haven't changed since preseason, that is, to continue training with a purpose every day; win an A10 regular season title; and win an A10 championship. We have a lot of work to do achieve those goals and we just need to focus on the process each day no matter who our next opponent is. During the SAM Jam, there were different stations that had different activities and information about alcohol and drugs. Station one showed a video of a highly intoxicated person who died because no one wanted to call the cops to help save him because they didn’t want to get in trouble for drinking. Students were then encouraged to share a time that they or someone else had experienced a bad situation while drinking. Station two had students pour water into a bottle to compare the amounts of beer and shots. This was to help students realize that they don’t drink more than they think they are drinking. Station three was an obstacle course that students had to participate in. They would go through the course once “sober” and the second time they went through, they had ankle weights tied to their ankles and they had to spin around five times before going through the course. This was to stimulate being “drunk” and trying to perform simple tasks such as walking. During the SAM Jam, some students were given a red dot. At the end of the SAM Jam, those red dots indicated people that had died in the hour that the SAM Jam event was going on. Come Join SAAC... Congrats to the SAAC & SAMs Members of the Month!
