<p>Lesson Plan Dorothea Bryant 2010 Fellow</p><p>Topic: Japanese Tea Ceremony Time: Two 53 minutes class periods</p><p>Goal: To have students observe an important cultural experience in Japanese society, the tea ceremony. Rationale: During my visit to Japan the students at Metropolitan Nishi in Tokyo and Asa Kita high school in Hiroshima invited the KKC Fellows to take part in the Japanese tea ceremony. </p><p>Objectives: 1) SWBAT to create a timeline with important dates that lead to the current day practice of the Japanese tea ceremony. 2) SWBAT to apply the following vocabulary while researching information about the tea ceremony: Way of Tea, tatami, kimono, Chabana, Seiza, Matcha, equipment used in tea ceremony (tea bowl, tea caddy, tea whisk, tea scoop). 3) SWBAT to write a one page paper that compare and contrast the Japanese tea ceremony to one of their cultural practices (e.g. inviting someone for coffee or tea, celebratory gatherings, holiday or religious practices)</p><p>Procedures:</p><p>1. Write the question on the board, what is a cultural experience that you practice? 2. Have students respond in writing or by raising their hands 3. Show PowerPoint slideshow of pictures from the tea ceremonies. 4. Show a short youtube video of a simple tea ceremony. Have students to work in groups of four where they brainstorm and write as much information as possible about the Japanese tea ceremony. Provide a handout for brainstorming (http://www.abcteach.com/japan/teaceremony.htm) 6. Write vocabulary words on board (SWBAT # 2) 7. Have students write notes about their own cultural practices. 8. Have student prepare timeline 9.
