Summer Assignments for Madame Hummel S French Classes

Summer Assignments for Madame Hummel’s French classes 2012-2013

For rising seniors (French V-IB et V-AP): Two googlevoice messages

*This is a mandatory assignment! *Objective: Retain your speaking proficiency

*Once during the month of July, and once during the month of August, call my googlevoice number and leave me a 3 minute message. Phone # (980) 216-8692

 Between July 1 and July 31, talk to me about how your school year went.  Between August 1 and August 24, talk to me about how your summer has been.  Be sure to time yourself--only include the time you are actually speaking—not the time it takes for the phone to pick up. Each message must be three minutes long. (Don’t forget that the recordings are digital so it’s really easy for me to see if it’s less than 3 minutes!)  Don’t forget to tell me who you are when you call!  Plan ahead—figure out when you are going to be on vacation, etc. Schedule time to do these 2 short assignments.  If you are unable to call during one of these months (for example if you are going to be in India for the entire month of July), email me ahead of time and we’ll work something out. FYI, I will not have access to email from June 18-28 or from July 13-29—it’s your responsibility to contact me in advance, and when I am available  DO NOT SCRIPT your messages (scripting makes this a writing assignment instead of a speaking assignment and defeats the purpose). It’s fine to prepare a bit in advance by talking to yourself, but you should NOT write anything down. I will be able to tell if you are reading from a script!  Each message is worth 20 points as an assessment during 1st quarter. o I’m grading primarily for completion—if you talk for 3 minutes and I can understand you, you’ll get all 20 points. I do not expect or want perfection—I want authentic speech. If you are short on time, incomprehensible, or reading from a script, you will lose points.

***Don’t forget that if you want me to write you a recommendation, College Recommendation Requests must be emailed to me by July 1 or I will be unable to write a letter for you. The specifications are on my wiki on the French 5 page.

Bonne chance! Enjoy your summer!

For rising juniors (French IV-IB): Two googlevoice messages

*This is a mandatory assignment! *Objective: Retain your speaking proficiency

*Once during the month of July, and once during the month of August, call my googlevoice number and leave me a 3 minute message. Enjoy your summer!

For rising sophomores (French III-IBMYP)

*Read the novel Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. This is an awesome novel that deals with the Holocaust during World War II from a French perspective. The story is moving and is pretty easy to read. We will use this book during a unit on France during World War II, which will review information you learned in 9th grade World History and will tie in to topics you study in English 10. *This is an optional summer assignment. You will be required to read this book during our class. It will be much easier for you to read it over the summer—during the school year, you’ll be very busy with homework, Personal Project, and activities. If I were you I’d do it now and get ahead!! *EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY! And you know you’ll need some extra credit, right? If you do this assignment over the summer and write a 200 word summary of the book, plus a 200 word reaction to the book, I’ll give you up to 20 points of extra credit to use on any assessment (points will be awarded based on thoroughness and depth of reflection). You must email this assignment to me by 5pm on August 24th to be eligible for extra credit.

Bonne chance! Enjoy your summer!

For rising freshmen (French II-IBMYP):

*This is a mandatory assignment for French II students ! If you are a Spanish or German student, you do not have to do this assignment. If you have not yet taken French I, you will do this assignment over Winter Break instead of over the summer. *Objective: This assignment is intended to give you the opportunity to practice writing in French so that you don’t forget everything over the summer. It also helps me get to know you and assess how much you know so that I can plan accordingly.

*Write 150 words in French about yourself to help me get to know you faster.  Use only the vocabulary and grammar that you know  You MAY use your notes from French I.  Do NOT use a dictionary, the internet, or ask anyone to help you—this must be entirely YOUR work.  If you use a dictionary or words that are not your own, I WILL be able to tell—I know how much French I students know!  I do not expect perfection—I expect you to have lots of mistakes—that’s okay—I am grading this for completion only—not for accuracy!!!! So there’s no reason to cheat!  If you use anything other than your brain and your notes, that is considered cheating and you will receive a 0!!!  If you don’t know how to say something in French—don’t say it! You may not use any English (other for names of people and places).  I prefer that you type this paper, but handwritten assignments will also be accepted. Here are some topics you may wish to include—feel free to add or subtract from this list. These are all topics from the CMS French I curriculum.  Your name, address, phone number, birthday, age and physical characteristics  Your family  What you like to do (or dislike doing), including sports, hobbies, subjects in school, foods, etc.  Your daily routine  Describe your home  What you like or do not like about your school, such as your classrooms, subjects, and activities  What you do during free time  Describe your community

Due at the beginning of our 2nd class. Feel free to email the assignment to me in advance (so you don’t have to worry about it anymore) at [email protected]. Worth 40 points as a test grade (in my class, this is the equivalent of 2 quizzes). Your grade is all or nothing—if you turn it in on time, meet the 150 word requirement, and there is nothing egregiously wrong with your paper (ie cheating, use of outside help or translators, obvious lack of effort), you will receive all 60 points. Late assignments will be accepted thru our 4th class, but will lose 15 points per class late. Bonne chance! Enjoy your summer!
