Names and Formulas for Ionic Compounds Name: ______

Safety: Wear safety glasses and follow standard safety procedures.

Purpose: To observe precipitate reactions (reactions that produce a solid) when combining ionic solutions, then write the proper chemical formula and name of products formed.

Procedure: Using the solutions listed below, you need to mix each cation (top) with each anion (side) to determine if a precipitate is formed. The precipitate will look cloud, like a powder was just added. Some will change colors.

1) You need three (3) drops of each solution for each possible reaction. (3 drops of the cation and 3 drops of the anion) 2) If a precipitate does NOT occur, write “NR” (No Reaction) in the box. 3) If a precipitate reaction does occur, write a description of what you see in the box. Descriptions may include terms such as: milky, grainy, cloudy, gelatinous, white, yellow, tan, brown, gray… (You will be doing a similar lab again in the next semester, so be as descriptive as you can.) 4) For each possible reaction, you need to write the FORMULA and NAME of each ionic compound that could be formed. Please ensure that the FORMULA has a net charge of zero. When NAMING the compounds remember that certain metal cations can have more than one possible charge, so please use the correct roman numerals for lead (Pb), Iron (Fe) and Copper (Cu).

Use this grid to record your observations.

AgNO3 Pb(NO3)2 CaCl2 (Ag+) (Pb2+) (Ca2+) e i Na2CO3 a 2- (CO3 ) b f j Na3PO4 3- (PO4 ) NaOH c g k (OH-) d h l Na2SO4 2- (SO4 ) Equation Chemical Formula (Net Charge of Zero) a.
