<p> Conduct Unmasking Procedures</p><p>031-503-3002</p><p>Conditions: Given a group of soldiers in MOPP 4 (with M8 detector paper) in an area where chemical agents have been used; and one of the following situations: 1. An M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit is available. 2. An M256A1 is not available.</p><p>Standards: Conduct unmasking procedures without incurring casualties.</p><p>Training and Evaluation</p><p>Performance Steps:</p><p>1. Senior person present selects one or two soldiers to unmask after permission is received from higher headquarters.</p><p>2. Conduct unmasking procedures with use of an M256A1 detector kit. a. Conduct unmasking procedures in the shade. b. Use M256A1 detector kit to test for chemical agents. Use M8 detector paper to check for possible liquid contamination. Continue unmasking procedures only if both tests come up negative. c. Direct the selected soldiers to unmask for five minutes; and then don, seal, and clear their masks. d. Observe these soldiers for ten minutes for symptoms. e. If no symptoms appear, direct all soldiers to unmask. f. Check soldiers for delayed symptoms. Have first aid treatment available. g. Complete steps 2a through 2f in sequence.</p><p>3. Conduct unmasking procedures without use of an M256A1 detector kit. a. Conduct unmasking procedures in the shade. b. Use M8 detector paper to check for possible liquid contamination. Continue unmasking procedures only if test comes up negative. c. Direct the selected soldiers to take a deep breath and break the seals of their masks (keeping their eyes open) for 15 seconds, and then seal and clear their masks. d. Observe these soldiers for ten minutes for symptoms. e. If no symptoms appear, direct these soldiers to break the seals of their masks, take two or three breaths, and then seal and clear their masks. f. Observe these soldiers for ten minutes for symptoms. g. If no symptoms appear, direct the selected soldiers to unmask for five minutes; and then don, seal, and clear their masks. h. Observe these soldiers for ten minutes for symptoms. i. If no symptoms appear, direct all soldiers to unmask. j. Check soldiers for delayed symptoms. Have first aid treatment available. k. The M256A1 Trainer kit will be used for training and evaluation purposes.</p><p>Brief Soldier: Tell the soldier he will be evaluated on his ability to conduct unmasking procedures with and without the use of a chemical agent detector kit. The soldiers taking part in the process will only act as directed by the soldier conducting the unmasking exercise and will not be evaluated on their performance.</p><p>Performance Measures Results 1. Selected one or two soldiers. GO / NO-GO 2. Conducted unmasking procedures with M256A1 kit in sequence. GO / NO-GO 3. Conducted unmasking procedures without M256A1 in sequence. GO / NO-GO</p><p>Evaluation Guidance: Score the soldier GO if all performance measures are passed. Score the soldier NO-GO if any performance measure is failed. If the soldier scores NO-GO, show the soldier what was done wrong and how to do it correctly.
