<p>January 18, 2010</p><p>SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS</p><p>The following is a brief summary of the new and revised paragraphs in the Standard for Drinking Water Coolers, UL 399, which have a future Effective Date of June 15, 2012 and the action that may be required to determine compliance.</p><p>Paragraphs General Subject and Comment 4.1(c) This new paragraph requires the installation/operating instructions of a drinking water cooler to include guidelines for ensuring that the water cooler is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter.</p><p>As an example, for a cord-connected drinking water cooler, the operating instructions could simply indicate that the water cooler is intended to be plugged into a receptacle of the ground fault circuit interrupting type. 7.1.2 & Section 44A New paragraph 7.1.2 and new Section 44A only apply to drinking water coolers that are equipped with ozone generating equipment. Such products will now need to comply with the Standard for Water Treatment Appliances, UL 979. New Section 44A outlines the requirements for the Ozone Test. This test is similar to the Ozone Test in UL 979. 17A.5 This new section only applies to drinking water coolers that use protective electronic circuits as a means for motor protection. </p><p>A protective electronic circuit providing motor protection within a drinking water cooler will now need to comply with either UL 991, the Standard for Tests for Safety-Related Controls Employing Solid-State Devices or with UL 60730-1A, Automatic Electrical Controls for Household and Similar Use, Part 1: General Requirements and any applicable Part 2 of UL 60730.</p><p>Software used in a protective electronic circuit that is a required part of the motor protection, is required to comply with either UL 1998, the Standard for Software in Programmable Components or UL 60730-1A, Automatic Electrical Controls for Household and Similar Use, Part 1: General Requirements.</p>
