Membrane Protein Production & Characterization

Membrane Protein Production & Characterization

Dear Colleagues,

We have confirmed that the University of Delaware is eligible to submit one proposal to NIH-NCRR for a new COBRE proposal. Academic institutions can host up to three COBR Awards, and we have had three of these for the past few years:

• Membrane Protein Production & Characterization

– PI: Abraham Lenhoff, UD

• Women in Science and Engineering on Osteoarthritis

– PI: Thomas Buchanan, UD

• Molecular Design of Advanced Biomaterials

– PI: Thomas Beebe, UD

Earlier this fall, Dr Lenhoff has received a COBRE Phase 3 award from NIH and thus we are now eligible to submit a new proposal.

Since UD can only submit one COBRE proposal to NIH, the Research Office requests pre-proposals by Monday, October 18, no longer than three pages.

Please include a justification and focus of the proposed COBRE application, the PI (has to have NIH R01 funding) the list of junior faculty that might be participating in the COBRE. Please note that these junior faculty cannot be on another COBRE at the same time. If they currently have INBRE funding, they would move to the COBRE funding, once that would be awarded.

Details on the COBRE program:

This year's competition deadline is

Letters of Intent Receipt Date(s): January 2, 2011

Application Receipt Dates(s): February 1, 2011

The RFA is listed under: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-09-079.html

NCRR plans to fund up to 10 new COBRE awards in 2011. However, competition might be significant. Currently 83 COBRE programs exist across the country - see http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/research_infrastructure/institutional_development_award/centers_of_biomedical _research_excellence/

An applicant must request a project period of five years and may request a budget for direct costs of up to and no more than $1.5 million per year, plus additional direct costs in year one only of up to $500,000 as a one-time expenditure for Alteration and Renovation of laboratory or animal facilities. As part of the expenditures, one can use up to $200k per person for recruitment related to the COBRE.

Therefore, the total COBRE opportunity is for $8 million over 5 years.

Please contact me if you have any question on this.

Karl Steiner

------

Dr. Karl V.
