“PENIEL, PLACE OF BROKENNESS”

ICEBREAKER: Describe a situation in which you broke a limb (arm, wrist, leg, foot). Does the injury still bother you?

LESSON:

1. Read Genesis 32:24-28. The night in Jacob’s life when he met God face-to-face was probably the longest night of his life. Can you remember the “longest night of your life” and how it brought you face-to-face with your relationship to God?

2. The angel reached out his hand and put Jacob’s thigh out ofjoint (verse 25). Jacob could no longer depend upon his own strength. How do difficult circumstances sometimes force us to be totally dependent upon God?

3. The Lord changed Jacob’s name from Jacob (trickster, deceiver) to Israel (prince with God). We all need a change, a conversion to dependence upon God. Describe a time in your life when circumstances brought you to a total transformation.

4. The word Peniel means the face of God. In Jacob’s brokenness, he found the face of God. What area of your life do you need to see the face of God in right now?

APPLICATION: Take a few minutes and pray for God to reveal Himself to you in the midst of the difficult circumstances you may be experiencing.

6
