BDA Model Scenario ELA

BDA Model Scenario – ELA

Before – Planning Session

Emily Koch is a 6th and 8th grade teacher at Westside Collaborative in NYC. Her school is working to implement the Common Core Standards by having students read and write across the curriculum daily, promote higher level thinking through questioning and learning activities, and to encourage student independence.

The instructional goal for this lesson is for students to evaluate digital resources to determine if they are credible sources. Her guiding question is: “When can you trust what you find on the web?”

Her instructional plan is to have students define key words through questioning and brainstorming as a whole class. The students will have to find and evaluate sources to use in their research. The research is based on the topic of year round school. Ms. Koch will provide a list of criteria to the students as to what makes a source credible. Students will work with a partner to read the sources and use the criteria to evaluate the information. At the conclusion of the lesson, Ms. Koch wants the students to reflect on their learning. One of her goals is to work on her questioning techniques.

The lesson is aligned to the following PACC Standard:

CC.8.6.6-8.G (ELA.W.6.8 ELA.W.7.8 ELA.W.8.8) Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

Possible Coaching Questions:

“Close Reading” - Notes on My Deeper Understanding of the CCSS: During – Classroom Visit

Use the space below to record your observations of the lesson in action.

After – Debriefing Session

 What non-judgmental, open-ended questions would you ask the teacher to promote reflection on the lesson?

 How will you share/present the data you collected with the teacher?
