<p> African Studies Center FLAS Fellowships (Foreign Languages & Area Studies) Summer 2006 Applications due March 03, 2006 The African Studies Center offers two Summer FLAS fellowships for Summer 2006.</p><p>Applications are now invited for Summer 2006</p><p>Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident, be admitted to or enrolled in a graduate program at Penn, or another institution with some African Studies focus, and have research or career plan that require the use of an African language. The African Studies Center at Penn currently offers nine African languages. In the past FLAS Fellowships have been competitively awarded to students to study Amharic, Igbo, Kinyarwanda, Shona, Swahili, Twi, Wolof, Yoruba, and Zulu, but other languages may also be approved. The fellowship covers tuition and general fees and provides an estimated stipend of $2500. Successful applicants will be expected to study the languages they require in an intensive summer course in an intermediate or advanced African language. Study may be conducted in the U.S. or abroad, but travel funds are not normally available. FLAS applications should be nominated by the Graduate Chair of the Department or the Associate Dean of the School in which the applicant is enrolled.
