Virtual Lab: Population Biology s1

Virtual Lab: Population Biology Name

How does competition affect population growth? Date

Period Purpose: In this investigation you will conduct an experiment and grow two species of the protozoan Paramecium, alone and together. You will then compare growth curves of the populations of each species.

Objectives:  Demonstrate how competition for natural resources in the environment can affect population growth.  Explain how availability of resources, such as food, can be limiting for populations.

Procedure Go to http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/0078757134/383928/BL_04.html , read and follow the procedure outlined for the experiment. Write your data and the answers to the questions on this sheet.

1. Make a hypothesis about how you think the two species of Paramecium will grow alone and how they will grow when they are grown together.

Paramecium Growth Data

P. aurelia grown P. caudatum P. aurelia grown P. caudtaum alone, cells/mL grown alone, in mixed culture, grown in mixed cells/mL cells/mL culture, cells/mL Day 0

Day 2

Day 4

Day 6

Day 8

Day 10

Day 12

Day 14

Day 16 2. Explain how you tested your hypothesis.

3. On what day did the Paramecium caudatum population reach the carrying capacity of the environment when it was grown alone? How do you know?

4. On what day did the Paramecium aurelia population reach the carrying capacity of the environment? How do you know?

5. Explain the differences in the population growth patterns of the two Paramecium species.

6. What does this tell you about how Paramecium aurelia uses available resources?

7. Describe what happened when the Paramecium populations were mixed in the same test tube.

8. Explain how this experiment demonstrates that no two species can occupy the same niche.
