Dear Wells Road Parents and Students

August 25, 2011

Dear Wells Road Parents and Students,

As you enjoy the summer of 2011 and prepare for the 2011-2012 school year, please consider your sneaker purchase. Children are often drawn to the “latest, greatest, coolest,” new sneaker on the market. Unfortunately, these are not always the best athletic shoes for their feet.

In physical education class we participate in a wide variety of activities. Students need a good all purpose sneaker which stays securely on their foot. In my 42 years as a runner, athlete, coach, and physical education teacher, I have learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. I would like to share some of my observations with you. I believe the following will help improve performance and prevent injury.

Sneakers that tie onto the foot are best. It may take some time and patience on your part to teach and learn, but it is time well spent.

Please try to avoid the following: Hiking, outdoor shoes These do not always grip the floor well. Some of the sole materials mark our rubber floor and the shoe may be heavier and more cumbersome on feet. Skateboard shoes These often do not have the flexibility and design to fit snugly around the foot, therefore not providing adequate support. Wheelies Even without the wheels, they are heavy, and not as well cushioned, especially in the heel, where the lack of cushion may cause bruising. Platform style sneakers These sneakers built too high off the ground and increase the chance of ankle sprains and may inhibit the student’s ability to move laterally (side to side). Sneakers that do not tie onto the Laces can always be replaced (I keep extras for the foot students at school). Elastic stretches and wears out. Velcro wears out, rips and breaks.

If I can offer any further advice, please contact me here at Wells Road School. Have a great summer!

Sincerely, Mark Acquaotta Physical Education Instructor
