Family Pedigree Project s1

Family Pedigree Project

Directions: Pick a disease or trait that runs in your family. It would be best to research and choose something that is known to be autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked recessive. Follow this trait or disease 3 generations. In other words, start with your grandparents, track it through to your parents’ generation, and finish off in your generation. You should only pick one side of your family to focus on, either your mother’s or your father’s. Be sure to adhere to the rules we learned in class (e.x. squares are males, colored in circles are affected females, Roman Numerals are used for generation number, etc.). Then compile a pedigree, tracking this trait or disease. If you prefer to make a digital copy instead, then please use Inspiration software to carry out the task. In addition to numbering all individuals in each generation, also include their first names on the pedigree. You must also compile a separate key outlining who each person is in every generation as well as whether or not they are affected. For instance, your key may look something like this:

Name: Teddi Brown Period: 1 Tracked: Red-green color blindness in my mom’s side of the family

Key: Generation I: 1. Laura – my grandmother; unaffected 2. Harry – my grandfather; affected

Generation II: 1. Sam – my uncle (Harry & Laura’s son); unaffected 2. Linda – mated with Sam; unaffected 3. Rachel – my aunt (Harry & Laura’s daughter); unaffected 4. Tom – mated with Rachel; unaffected 5. Gloria – my aunt (Harry & Laura’s daughter); unaffected 6. Martin – mated with Gloria; unaffected 7. Melanie – my mom (Harry & Laura’s daughter); unaffected 8. Landon – mated with Melanie (my dad); unaffected

Generation III: 1. Carl – my cousin (Sam & Linda’s son); unaffected 2. Dedra – Carl’s wife; unaffected 3. Cindy – my cousin (Sam & Linda’s daughter); unaffected 4. Ben – my cousin (Tom & Rachel’s son); affected 5. Bobby – my cousin (Tom & Rachel’s son); unaffected 6. Dillon – my cousin (Martin & Gloria’s son); affected 7. Courtney – my sister (Landon & Melanie’s daughter); unaffected 8. Me (Landon & Melanie’s daughter); unaffected Pedigree Project Grading Rubric

Name: ______Period:____ Date:______

Category Comments Points Clear labeling of pedigree with which disease _____/2 or trait is being tracked 3 full generations tracked on one side of _____/6 family; that side of family clearly labeled (mom’s or dad’s) All rules for pedigrees followed, such as: _____/9 -Roman Numerals for each generation -numbers for each individual -square for males, circles for females -colored in shapes for affected individuals only -correct lines (e.x. horizontal lines for mating, vertical lines for offspring, etc.) First names included on pedigree for all _____/3 individuals Pedigree is organized, attractive, neat, and _____/5 legible (or on print-out if using Inspiration) Attractive, neat, legible, and organized key is _____/9 provided, including all requirements: -separated out by generation number -first names included -identification of who each person is relationally -each individual identified as affected or unaffected Key accurately matches pedigree (e.x. gender _____/6 shapes, mating relationships, offspring, who is affected, etc.) *Genotypes of as many individuals as possible Y or N included on pedigree using logic *(a) Hypothesis of which mode of inheritance Y or N the trait or disease follows with logical reasoning as to why OR (b) Actual mode of inheritance identified for trait or disease, including a citation of proof for information *To earn extra credit.
