Library Academic Roundtable Scenario

Library Academic Roundtable Scenario

Library ARC Scenario

Water Conservation:

Although 75% of the earth’s surface is covered in water only about 1% is suitable for human consumption. As a result, water conservation is extremely important and protecting our precious water supply not only protects our environment, but also the economy and our health. The lack of rainfall coupled with the fact that the water table has dropped significantly in the Tampa Bay area is worrisome. Providing enough water for the current population is critical, so local and state governments have mandated water conservation and restrictions. Some Tampa Bay residents are concerned and have started conserving water in a variety of ways. Some residents are conserving water at the tap. For instance, they are turning off the water when they brush their teeth and/or shave, they are not flushing their toilets every time they use them, and they are repairing leaky faucets. Some residents use appliances to help conserve water. For instance, they are using Energy Star appliances to do their laundry and wash their dishes; they are installing Low-Flow shower heads and toilets and are using faucet aerators to help keep their water usage down without thinking about it. And some residents are conserving water outside their homes by using barrels to collect rain water, using reclaimed water, or they simply chose to not water their lawns and plants.

Answer the following questions regarding this scenario:

1. Define this problem in your own words. 2. Compare and contrast the three proposed solutions. 3. Select one of the proposed solutions that you feel is most effective for protecting our water supply and defend that solution. 4. Describe any weaknesses in your selected solution. 5. Make suggestions on ways to improve/strengthen your solution. You may include information not described in the scenario above (e.g., resources you’ve read outside of class). 6. Reflect on your own thought process after completing the assignment. a) “What did you learn from this process?” b) “Did you consider the consequences of your solution?” c) “What would you do differently next time to improve?” SPC’s Assessment of Critical Thinking (ARC) Scoring Template

Rater (scorer) name: ______Paper ID: ______Date: ______

Performance Exemplary Proficient Developing Emerging Not Present Score Element (4) (3) (2) (1) (0) I.
