GROOMS for Committee. 23 </p><p>[3253-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF 12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF UNITED 13 STATES HIGHWAY 301 IN ORANGEBURG COUNTY FROM 14 ITS INTERSECTION WITH INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 26 TO 15 ITS INTERSECTION WITH HOMESTEAD ROAD “DR. 16 THOMAS L. MOSS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY” AND ERECT 17 APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS 18 HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “DR. THOMAS L. 19 MOSS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY”. 20 21 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly takes great pride 22 in recognizing those South Carolinians who give tirelessly of 23 themselves in furtherance of their individual communities and this 24 great State; and 25 26 Whereas, the late Dr. Thomas Moss was certainly one such 27 individual, as his life stands as a testament to all the good that 28 comes from the hard work, integrity, and diligence of one man; 29 and 30 31 Whereas, Dr. Moss was the son of the late Willie and Rosana Moss 32 and was a native of the Four Holes Community. There, he 33 attended Orangeburg County public schools and later attended 34 Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, before he was drafted 35 into the United States Army to serve in the Korean War; and 36 37 Whereas, the loving husband of Gladys Moss, a retired educator, 38 Dr. Moss was the proud father of two children, Thomasina and 39 Andre; and 40</p><p>[3253] 3 1 Whereas, Dr. Moss served the citizens of this State for a number of 2 years as field representative for the South Carolina Office of U.S. 3 Senior Senator, the late Strom Thurmond; and 4 5 Whereas, dedicating his life to education and civil rights 6 advancement, Dr. Moss received countless honors for his 7 commitment to social causes in South Carolina. He received the 8 Freedom Fighter Award from the Orangeburg branch of the 9 NAACP, the United States Senate Loyal Service Award, and the 10 Order of Palmetto Award, among many others; and 11 12 Whereas, Dr. Moss helped to meet the needs of the people through 13 community, state, and national involvement, including an 14 affiliation with the Orangeburg/Bowman branch of the NAACP, 15 the Orangeburg BiRacial Committee, the OrangeburgCalhoun 16 Counties Area Committee for Economic Progress, and the 17 Advisory Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission; and 18 19 Whereas, Dr. Moss’ legacy will live on in years to come through 20 the Thomas Moss Civic Leadership Award established in his 21 name; and 22 23 Whereas, a dedicated member of the Andrew Chapel Baptist 24 Church in Orangeburg County, Dr. Moss served as Chairman of 25 the Deacon’s Ministry; and 26 27 Whereas, it is fitting and proper to forever celebrate the legacy of 28 this outstanding son of South Carolina by having a portion of 29 United States Highway 301 in Orangeburg County named in his 30 honor. Now, therefore, 31 32 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 33 concurring: 34 35 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 36 Carolina request that the Department of Transportation name the 37 portion of United States Highway 301 in Orangeburg County from 38 its intersection with Interstate Highway 26 to its intersection with 39 Homestead Road “Dr. Thomas L. Moss Memorial Highway” and 40 erect appropriate markers or signs along this highway that contain 41 the words “Dr. Thomas L.
