1 Reading Workshop Daily Plan

1. Mini-Lesson Focus: Synthesizing

Two-Word Reflection and Think-Ink-Pair-Share:

Begin this mini-lesson by discussing the fact that good readers are able to take the information they read, think about it, and allow it to change their thinking. They ask themselves, what did the author want me to learn and apply in my own life from this story? Tell them that this process is called synthesizing. Tell them that you are going to practice this together.

Read a picture book from the box below.

Without discussion, instruct students to write down two words that stand out to them as key ideas from the book. They don’t have to be related to each other. Then have them use the “Think-Ink-Pair-Share” technique to develop their synthesis. Think: Why did you select those two words? Ink: Write your reasons for your choices. Pair: Find a partner. Share: Share your words and the reasons behind your thinking. Tell how the ideas in the book changed your thinking.

During Reading Workshop, have students pay attention to how their thinking is changed by the text they are reading. 3.
