Her Work Lives On</p><p> First Lady of the World</p><p> stood up for world peace, human rights</p><p>Eleanor Roosevelt Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady of the World. She helped others with peace and human rights. When she was a little girl, she came from a wealthy family, but she had a hard childhood. Her parents and brother died by the time she was 10. Eleanor was shy, but she liked to help people in her community by decorating Christmas trees and helping immigrants read. Eleanor helped others by giving speeches, helping her husband, Franklin Roosevelt, when he had polio. She gave radio speeches and wrote for magazines. She even started a furniture business called Val-Kill. In 1933, Eleanor’s husband became the president during the Great Depression. Eleanor received thousands of letters, and she tried to write back. She was called the president’s “eyes and ears”. Eleanor even flew with Amelia Earhart over Washington DC in her evening dress. Eleanor was named Eleanor Everywhere. In 1945 Franklin died from a stroke, but she kept working. She had been the First Lady for 12 years. She helped found the United Nations and wrote the Declaration of Human Rights. She even taught college at age 75. Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady of the World. She stood up for world peace and human rights. </p>
