Certification for Out-Of-State Applicants

Certification for Out-Of-State Applicants

How Out-of-State Applicants Can Obtain Connecticut Teacher Certification

(This page is an abbreviated version of a Fact Sheet available on the CSDE web site at: http://www.state.ct.us/sde/dtl/cert/facts01/fact106.htm )

Connecticut welcomes out-of-state teacher candidates. Candidates from out-of-state may meet requirements for Connecticut teacher certification if they have completed an approved educator preparation program at a regionally accredited institution, and/or have teaching, special service or administrative experience in another state under a valid teacher certificate from that state.

Eligibility for Connecticut certification is based upon a review of official transcripts, recommendation by the candidate’s higher education teacher preparation institution, and/or verification of successful experience. Applicants certified in other states who are determined to be eligible for Connecticut certification will receive the closest available grade-level endorsement.

Connecticut does not have reciprocity with any other state. However, Connecticut does participate with 39 other states in the NASTDEC Interstate Contract, so it accepts state-approved certification programs from any regionally accredited teacher preparation institution in those states. All candidates must meet Connecticut testing and/or experience requirements applicable to the requested certification endorsement.

Connecticut requires that all candidates meet certain testing requirements:  Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) or meet waiver requirements  Subject area tests as applicable to certain endorsement areas (i.e., Praxis II modules) More information about testing expectations can be found on Connecticut’s State Department of Education web site at: www.state.ct.us/sde (click on “Certification” button, then “Assessments” button) or by contacting the certification bureau (see email and phone number below).

Out-of-state applicants who qualify may be issued a one-year, non-renewable Interim certificate with a deferral for passing the Praxis tests, provided that all other course work requirements have been met. To maintain certification and obtain subsequent certificates, the applicant must complete all required tests prior to the expiration date of the Interim certificate.

For More Information

If you have any questions or would like to receive the application materials for Connecticut certification, you may contact the Bureau of Certification and Professional Development website: www.state.ct.us/sde.

You also may contact the Bureau by:

 Phone: 860-713-6969 between the hours of 1 and 5 p.m. EST or  E-mail: [email protected]
