Karina – part-time student

INTRODUCTION: This is Karina. She’s an indigenous woman, and is studying a Bachelor of Teaching, but just part-time because she has quite a full-time job at home, caring for her husband, as well as two young children. She only did up to a Year 10 education, but went through the TEP [Tertiary Enabling Program] before commencing higher education.

KARINA: The main difficulty that I found when I was studying was, because I’m a carer for my husband, and I have two children, I found it hard with time management, and working around that. So I made sure I had a study plan put together, and just tried to keep to it as much as I could. But in saying that, there’s always something that comes up. It could be a death in the family, or you know, there’s always something that could set you back. But you just keep going and make sure you talk to your lecturers, and normally they’re understanding.

I had a lot of help and support from CarersNT. I went in and did some study at CarersNT on their computer. I also found that the indigenous computer labs were really helpful, because I can’t study at home all the time. I’d go in there for a couple of hours of the day after my unit, and then try and get as much done as I could.

One thing that I did was I make sure there’s one day out of the week just for myself. I like to go and get a massage, or [laughs] you know, just go and get my nails done, as girls do. And that sort of puts me back to… you know, I feel good, then I can get into study. see if what I was saying was making sense.
