<p> Technology-Connected Lesson Plan</p><p>Title: Picture Fill In WordArt Vocabulary Grade Levels: Any grade level Curriculum Areas:  Science, Social Studies, any area using vocabulary words Measurable Objectives:  TSW define new vocabulary words and use pictures to fill in the letters of the words LA Content Standards:  Standard Five Students locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge.  ELA-5-E3 locating, gathering, and selecting information using graphic organizers, simple outlining, note taking, and summarizing to produce texts and graphics; </p><p> ELA-5-E4 using available technology to produce, revise, and publish a variety of works;  Technology Guidelines:  Use a variety of developmentally appropriate resources and productivity tools (e.g., logical thinking programs, writing and graphic tools, digital cameras, graphing software) for communication, presentation, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and storie </p><p> Use technology tools (e.g., publishing, multimedia tools, and word processing software) for individual and for simple collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for a variety of audiences. </p><p> Utilize search strategies employing keywords, phrases, and Boolean operators (and, or, not) to access and retrieve information. </p><p> Use technology resources to assist in problem-solving, self- directed learning, and extended learning activities</p><p>Technology Connection:  Microsoft Word</p><p> Digital pictures</p><p>1 Procedures:  Students search and locate pictures to match the vocabulary words of the unit or lesson they are studying. (Pictures need to be long and thin to fit. Pictures may need to be formatted to fit.)  The teacher explains to the students how to use WordArt fill in to use pictures to fill in the letters.  First, begin a new office blank document.  Change the Page Setup to Landscape. (File, Page Setup, second tab Paper Size, Landscape.)  Click on Zoom, change to 50%, so you can see the entire page.  Click Insert, Picture, WordArt. And pick the one (outline letters) in the left top corner.  Type the vocabulary word. Ok. (The word you typed will appear on the page.)  Pull out the handles on the corners to make the WordArt fill out the bottom half of the page.  Move the directional arrows on the keyboard to place the WordArt specifically where you want it.  Click on the WordArt to highlight it (make it active.)  On the bottom of the screen, click on the Fill Color bucket arrow pointing downward.  Click Fill Effect, second tab Picture, Select Picture.  Browse for the picture you have already selected.  I typed in HURRICANE and selected the picture I had already saved of a hurricane. The picture appears within the letters of the WordArt.  Now you are ready to put in the definition.  Go to dictionary.com.  Type in the word hurricane in the top text box.  Click the button, “Look it up.”  Now let’s put the definition on another page, so when it’s printed, it will be the back or a matching card.  Press the Enter button until the cursor moves to a second page. Scroll down so that page becomes the one you see on the screen. Keep entering until the cursor is approximately 2/3 the way down on the second page.  Return to dictionary.com. Click and drag across the text you want to copy from dictionary.com that define the word you have chosen.  <Control><C> to copy the word. 2  Return to your WordArt document.  Insert at text box in the bottom half of the WordArt document.  Inside the text box, paste the definition.  Size the definition and justify it. I did 36pts. Full justify.  Save your work.  Print your work.  Print the first page, then put the page back in exactly as it was first printed (topside up) to print the second page.  Fold to make an interactive word for a word wall, or cut the vocabulary word and the definition in half to make matching cards that could be laminated. Students truly enjoy making hands-on learning tools that can be used over and over again. This is an excellent activity for family technology night and a chance to incorporate real life pictures.
