<p> ZOONOSES OF BIRDS *Wearing the recommended personal protective equipment will make the transmission of diseases less likely.</p><p>PATHOGEN TRANSMISSION ANIMAL DISEASE HUMAN DISEASE Cryptosporidium spp.  Direct contact, fecal-  dysnea, cough, stunted growth, diarrhea  immunocompromised patients are highly oral, inhalation  may have high mortality susceptible to severe, persistent diarrhea Aspergillosis  Direct contact  fever, anorexia, respiratory distress  bronchopneumonia  Dnhalation  diarrhea, emaciation, high mortality  more severe in debilitated patients</p><p>Chlamydia psittaci  Inhaling aerosolized  usually subclinical  usually mild respiratory illness (Psittacosis) respiratory secretions  conjuctivitis is most common sign  fever, chills, muscle ache, pneumonia or contact with feces  pleuritis, diarrhea  very severe in the elderly, can be fatal Cryptococcus  Inhalation  subclinical  cutaneous lesions neoformas  Contact with open  meningitis wound Mites  Direct contact  anemia, alopecia, erythema  painful bites: erythema, edema, allergic (Dermanyssus spp.,  dirty plumage dermatitis Ornithonyssus spp.) Influenza  Direct contact,  anorexia, coughing, sinusitis, edema,  anorexia, coughing, sneezing, lacrimation, inhalation cyanosis, neurologic signs, diarrhea sinusitis, fever, muscle aches Fowl Cholera  Fecal-oral, direct  acute septicemia, edema, cyanosis  wound infection, septic arthritis, (Pasteurella spp.) contact  problem results from poor hygiene osteomyelitis, bronchitis, pneumonia Mycobacterium spp.  Iinhalation, ingestion  progressive diarrhea, wasting, lameness  pulmonary disease in adults  soft tissue abscesses, ulcers, granulomas Newcastle’s Disease  Aerosolized particles  anorexia, respiratory disease, neurologic  conjunctivitis, fever, respiratory infection Paramyxovirus  Infected food or water signs Campylobacter  Fecal-oral  asymptomatic  diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever  diarrhea, anorexia Salmonella  Fecal-oral  asymptomatic  diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever  diarrhea</p><p>References</p><p>Acha, PN; B Szyfres. 1989.
